Week 7 Report
A Star is Born. Normally there is the occasional highlight that needs a special mention. This week, where do you start? Where do you finish? Have you left anything out? Rowhedge A (Roger Clarke & Nigel Claydon) unbeaten league leaders up against Tollgate A (Roger Hance & Martyn Green), winless and bottom of the league, must have contributed to the most memorable game ever played in this tournament since it's inception. A storming evening from the most unlikely source, Roger Hance, taking away Roger Clarkes' 100% record, when winning both his singles and pairing up to win the doubles. Every game went the full distance, so each was very finely balanced, and although Tollgate ran out 4-1 winners, their 1st. ever win doubling and their win total, nothing should be taken away from the valiant efforts of the Rowhedge pair. Well done to all four players but especially Roger Hance. Elsewhere, 2nd. Place Rowhedge B (Kemil Lentas & Mark Glenister) failed to capitalise on this result, going down 3-2 to Essex Blades (Wudong Liu & Lawrance Chan Long Hei) after leading 2-0, so they still remain 2 points adrift. Rowhedge C (Chloe Andrews & Jared Chelski) overcame Tollgate B (Denise Thompson & Jenny Clarke) 4-1 after Denise had won the first match. This puts the Rowhedge side in 2nd. place shared with Rowhedge B and Pegasus A (Steve Noble & Stan Flint) who beat Reapers (Oli Reynolds & guest Pawel Szermo)3-2, with no one remaining unbeaten. Pegasus B (Helen Woolnough & Vic Little) swept aside Gt. Horkesley A (Phil Wolski & Steve Holland) 4-1 with Helen being in very fine form. Finally, Zeroabove (Rik James & Alan Burgess) beat Tollesbury Titans (Tom Lewis & Rob King) 4-1. Tollesbury won the doubles in straight sets and must consider themselves unlucky in losing all the singles by the narrowest of margins. Next weeks fixture to watch, Rowhedge A against Rowhedge B, 1st. and joint 2nd. Will it as good as this weeks top match?
