Rotherham Advertiser 26th February

In Division Three this week the youngsters of Rotherham Scorpions L met the veterans of Stag School of Motoring B. Amy Marriott, Josh Wilkes and Sam Wagstaff with a grand total age of 32 versus Eric Hargreaves, Warwick Plummer and John Burton amassing 198 years! Experience or youth? Hargreaves proved the former as he beat top 4 nationally ranked Marriott in three games. Wilkes battled very hard to win his first in the fifth game. Wagstaff had a superb win in five games also to give Scorpions the lead at 2-1. Marriott added a third. Hargreaves took his second to pull one back and Wilkes returned the favour to restore the two sets advantage. Doubles to the visitors to clinch the first point of the night. Plummer won his only one of the night against Wagstaff. Marriott then up against Burton and showed why she is at the top of the tree completing her maximum. Match to Scorpions. Hargreaves then also made it three from three as he beat Wilkes in the last set of the night but it made no difference as the young players showed that 166 years advantage in experience was, on this occasion, a disadvantage!

The shock of the week came in Division One when Phoenix A ended the winning run of Scorpions A with a 7-3 victory. Scorpions still retain a 5 point advantage at the top of the League. Richard Element got yet another maximum supported brilliantly by Phil Walton with a win and Mick Bell with a brace. Also in this division Phoenix B welcomed Swallownest WMC to Phoenix Social Club for their match. Chris Cattell, Dave Marsh and Eddie Fogg had a close tussle with Jim Jeickles, Dave Kirkup and Laurence Lewis-Hanna. The home team were victors in a good battle but the star of the night was Lewis-Hanna with a maximum despite his team losing.

In Division Two Stag A cruised past Phoenix E as Rob Eyre and Pete Eyre both took maximums and Steve Garratt won two. The only opposition was Dave Gurney winning one to prevent the whitewash. A similar fate awaited Phoenix C as they hosted L.S.M. A. Glen Carson was the only member of the home team to clinch a win as Mick Foster (3), Mick Brooks (3) and Gary Firth (2) brushed past them to maintain their challenge at the top of the League.

Back in Division Two Scorpions E hosted Scorpions C at Bramley. Michael Taylor got the match started with an easy win over Tom Howard. Then Jess Truman battled tremendously hard against Dennis Green but just could not get the better of him as she lost in five games. Andy Saxton went down to Jochen Kurtlander to leave his team trailing 2-1. Truman had another really close battle, this time with Howard, but managed to win in five on this occasion. Taylor and Saxton both won their next sets to give them a 4-2 lead. Crucial doubles won by the visitors 4-3. Kurtlander won his match against Truman 4-4. All to play for. Saxton stepped up and cruised past Howard in three straight games and then so did Taylor for his hat-trick brushing aside Green. 6-4 to the home team.
