Phoenix D were home to club-mates Phoenix C last week in Division Two of the Rotherham Table Tennis League. John Hallgarth opened the proceedings against Russ Clayton losing to the visitor in three easy games. Next on Dave Engledow taking on the experienced Alan Waistnidge and again the opposite player proved too strong as the latter win in three straight games. Could Mo Arshid get the ‘home’ team on the scorecard? A long battle ensued with Ian Burnell going to the deciding game and Arshid pinched it 12-10 in the decider. So 2-1 to the C team. However, the visitors took the next five in a row and secured an 8-2 win with Waistnidge getting a maximum supported b two from Clayton and Burnell who both fell victim of Mo Arshid.
Also in this division L.S.M. B got their season off to a flying start with a brace of wins over Clifton D and Scorpions D. Dave Sayner, John Bradshaw and Steve Wilson opened up their season seeing off Francis Lovell, Steve Naylor and Richard Proctor but it was far from easy despite the 8-2 scoreline. First match of the night Sayner beat Lovell in three quick games but the next match went the distance with Naylor just squeezing past Bradshaw in four games three going to deuce. Proctor then went to five with Wilson 11-9 in the fifth game. So Clifton were actually 2-1 up at this point. But LSM sailed through the next 7 in a row to win 8-2. And in this week’s game L.S.M. whitewashed poor Scorpions – Jess Truman, Stuart Foers and Dennis E. Green on the receiving end.
In Division Three Clifton E made up of Alan Redfern, Peter Gatley and Keith Lund hosted Scorpions I, Ben Henson, Harley Richardson and Jack young, three young lads from the latest crop of junior players from Rotherham Scorpions. It turned out to be a rather quick evening as the three experienced adults from Clifton could only manage to win one game all night. Harley came the closest to winning a set as he managed to take Lund to deuce in two games but the final result was never in doubt as Clifton whitewashed the Scorpions team 10-0.
In the top division defending champions, looking to achieve a hat-trick of titles, were away to Swallownest at their temporary venue at East Herringthorpe WMC after a fire at Swallownest MW in the summer. At home were Jim Jeickles, Pete Morgan Snr and Steve Needham and for Scorpions Harry Saxton, Craig Hastie and Jamie Hudd. Saxton and Hastie got the away side off to a flying start with two quick wins over Jeickles and Needham respectively. Morgan tried hard to stem the flow but lost in four to Hudd. This was the theme of the night as Scorpions proceeded to complete a whitewash 10-0 with Morgan being the only home player putting up any resistance with a five game close match with Saxton. One match down twenty-three to go!
