Cup week last week in the Rotherham Table Tennis League and defending champions L.S.M. A won comfortably against Phoenix B. Mick Large, Joe Addy and Helmuth Osborne turned out for Phoenix and could have proved a difficult challenge but James Houghton, Mick Foster and Mick Brooks sailed through with a 50 point advantage in this handicap competition.
Also winning were Phoenix C who summarily dealt with their E team running out 36 point winners. Clifton A in the form of Russ Drayton, Tony Lingard and Terry Curran had an even easier victory as they brushed Clifton D aside by over 100 points. John Helliwell, Chris Thompson and Richard Proctor on the receiving end of the drubbing. Stag A squeezed past Scorpions D by 17 points to win. Rob Eyre, Steve Garrett and Pete Webster the victors. Ali Nadzafalijevs, Stuart Foers and Pete Smith the defeated.
Phoenix C gave Scorpions D a thrashing this week in Division Two of the normal League competition as Russ Clayton, Alan Waistnidge and Ian Burnell all took maximum three wins. The only consolation to Scorpions was the doubles. And in the top flight Gary Firth joined Mick Foster and James Houghton in a hard fought contest with Phoenix A. Firth and Houghton took two whilst Foster won all his three. Craig Straw managed to win two of his for the away team but Mick Large and Mick Jarvis could not get on the scoreboard.
In Division Three Scorpions G went down to Scorpions K with Connnor Halford and Harley Richardson winning the only two for the youngsters as Phil Richardson, Dave Piper and David Hudson won easily. Also in Three Phoenix F played Phoenix E. Bob Vickers was the only one to score a win for the lower team whilst Stuart Element (3), Arni Gosh (2) and Maurice Druce (3) romped home 9-1.
Meanwhile in Division One Scorpions C team met their B team and dismissed them summarily with an 8- 2 win, Alan Battye and James Grayson getting maximums with Vince Loh taking one. On the other table at Clifton Methodist Church on the same night Scorpions A were facing strong opposition from Mick Brooks, Mick Foster and Darren Lindley of L.S.M. A. One of Scorpions players got stuck in London at the last minute so they only had Craig Hastie and Steve Arliss but these two put up a fantastic fight winning two each and the doubles to pinch an unlikely point at the outset. This leaves Scorpions C top and Scorpions A second while L.S.M. remain in third.
