Rotherham Advertiser Report 4th December

In Division Two Phoenix D had an easy victory over Scorpions C. Scorpions were at home, Phil Richardson, Dennis E. Green and Glyn Ward representing the team that were Division Three champions last season. But they are finding it tough going in the division above. John Hallgarth, Staurt Element and Dave Engledow were visiting for Phoenix. Both Hallgarth and Element took maximums with Engledow winning two of his three. The only man on the scorecard for Scorpions was Green managing to win the one against Engledow.

At the top of this division there is a massive battle for the top spot as Clifton B and Scorpions F both have played 10 and won 9. Scorpions team of Chris Johnson, Alex Bland and Gary Cooper had a narrow win over Stag A’s Rob and Pete Eyre and Pete Webster. Johnson ws the star of the night winning all three of his whilst Pete Eyre managed to earn himself a brace.

In Division Three Clifton D top the list with 8 wins from 8 so far, Phoenix F and Scorpions H their nearest challengers. Scorpions K and L met in this Division. The L team fielding no-one older than 11 years old and the K team with a range from teens to over 60s! Amy Marriott showed why she is a top nationally ranked girl player winning her first match easily against the experience of Ray Jackson. Dave Piper strode past Billie Wales and Alex Selway continued his great form with an easy win over Josh Wilkes. Marriott won her second, battling to get past Selway leaving the match level at 3-3 by the doubles. Always a big set when the score is close, the K team pinched it in the final game. Despite Marriott getting a brilliant hat trick the match score ended up 6-4 to the K team.

In the top division Swallownest M.W. were hosting Scorpions A. The former put out three of their very long serving member Jimmy Jeickles, Dave Kirkup and Steve Needham whilst Scorpions had Alan Battye, Jamie Hudd and Craig Hastie. Hudd first on versus Jeickles and the home player pushed Hudd to the limit only just losing out in the fifth game. Hastie had a similar struggle against Needham but also won. Battye then took no time seeing off Kirkup in three games. Needham again against Hudd. This went to the fifth and once again Hudd just managed to pip it. Battye next winning once more in three straight games against Jeickles but they were all close. Next two to Scorpions also. Battye won his third not dropping a game all night. Hudd won his third in another marathon. Hastie rounded off a 10-0 win. Scorpions now well clear at the top of the League and looking firm favourites to retain their title.

In the second round of the League knock-out handicap competition the leaders of the League Scorpions A have been drawn against the bottom team in the League Scorpions L. The handicap system should balance it out for the young players of the L team and the experienced players of the A team will not be able to slip up much if they are to avoid defeat. Meanwhile last year’s winners L.S.M. A are drawn against Scorpions E. The latter are having a good run in Division Two at the moment so this will prove a challenging match for the team from East Herringthorpe W.M.C.
