Mike Maynard

Tracy, Tom and Rachel Maynard would like to thank everyone who attended Mike’s funeral, what a great turnout for our lovely Mike.

The very generous donations to the Duchess of Kent hospice raised a wonderful £500.

Thank you everyone,

Tracy Maynard

I am very sad to report that Mike Maynard passed away in the early hours of Saturday 8th September, 2018.

Our thoughts and sympathies are with Tracy, Tom and Rachel.

Mike - or Bill to some of his friends - played in the Reading league for the best part of 60 years for YMCA, Rabsons, Calcot, Royal Berks Hospital and latterly for the Curzon Club.

He served on the RDTTA Committee for a couple of years in the 1960's and again as Divisional Fixture Secretary for 4 years in the 1980's.

He was a great ambassador for the game and generous, taking time out to give other players advice on how to improve their game and would happily give an impromptu coaching session.

He will be missed by many.

Mike (Bill) Maynard.
Bill and I first entered a team in the Reading Junior league in 1957. We had first met in Battle School in 1948!

We joined the old YMCA in Friar Street and since I played a bit at school I taught him to play in a tiny room overlooking the old tennis court.  About that time he returned the compliment by teaching me how to drink Brakspears ordinary!

In the early 1960's we both played occasionally for the Berkshire county side and indeed I recall playing doubles at the Portsmouth Open and being drawn against Johnny Leach in the first round.....if memory serves me right I don't think we made the second round.

Bill and I had 70 years of friendship and I don't recall a cross word between us. He was the best of sportsman, honest and always put the other guy first.

I'm proud he was my friend.
