Summer League Winners survive the heat

On the last night of the season and with all to play for, top of the table Raiders (Dean Walmsley, Ogi Kostov, Manoj Gandhi) defeated defending champions and 2nd placed Jailbirds (Adam Linton, Toby Ellis, Adam Oldfield) in a tight seesaw match to become 2018 Summer League Division 1 Champions. Like most teams in the summer league, both Raiders and Jailbirds had a pool of players to choose from so congratulations also go to Raiders players Alex Tyson, Josh Lumb and the ever youthful Tony Rigby and team captain Martin Shaw  and Oliver Garmston for Jailbirds.

In Division 2 Happy Wanderers (Mick Mahon, Ian Holt, Ian Pemberton, Mukesh Patel and Satish Ranka) kept their nerve to defeat Colts and hold off a determined surge from 2nd placed Desperados (Martin Ireland, Tamar Packford, Phil Robinson, Chloe Ireland and Ken Wright).

Congratulations also to Matthew Westwood [Scrambled Legs] who, in his first competition playing in Preston, topped the individual averages.

Thanks go to event organisor “Little” Barry Crook for once again ensuring a smooth running 15 weeks of competition – no mean feat in a World Cup year – Andrew White for setting up the website for the summer league and updating the results, and John “the enforcer” Irving for making sure match fees were paid on time. Thanks also to all competitors. The summer league is an important source of income for the league, a chance to try out new rules and scoring system and provide a fun competitive environment for players to keep their eye in and try new things out during what is traditionally the table tennis “off season”.

*Please keep an eye out on the website as the Winter League fixtures will soon be announced.
