DIDCOT KNOCKED OUT
Didcot’s Carter Cup team (Todd Stanmore, Lewis Waddup and Rafe Fleming) was knocked out in the Southern Zone qualifiers at Christchurch on Sunday, 22nd April. Todd and Lewis played first up against hosts, Bournemouth, losing 1-4, just winning the doubles. This match could so easily have gone the other way, with Todd losing to both Jack Trafford and Ali Malloch from a winning position in the decider.
Plymouth’s duo of Josh Millman and Uther Kingdom were the class act of the day, much too strong for all opponents, beating them all 5-0. Here again Todd had a winning lead against Uther Kingdom (junior ranked 36) but fell away at the end.
There was little to play for in the final match v Brighton, but Rafe and Lewis found more energy for the two final singles than Billy Keegan and Brandon Bennett, coming back from 1-2 down to record a 3-2 victory. Rafe took both his singles. It could have been 4-1, but somehow Lewis and Rafe lost the doubles in five, having been 2-0 up and blowing a good lead in the 3rd.
This was a worthwhile venture. Rafe will have another two years as a junior, and Todd will have another five: they should be back next year to relish the challenge.
Rafe Fleming won both his singles against Brighton.
