This competition was played on 18th March at the Forum. A disappointing turnout of 7, where were the Bicester and Holton players?
However, the competition was not disappointing with close, hard fought games.
Two groups produced close play. In Group A Vicky Coll edged out Pat O’Regan in 5 close games, with none won by more than two points; Vicky coming back from 2-1 down to win the group. Pat was runner up.
In group B there was a three way tie for the top spot. It was decided on Sets difference. Jack Smith with 7-4 sets, Ben Hague with 7-5 and Terry Ruane with 6-4 was the final order. Ben eased out Terry from the runners up place only on the number of sets won.
In the semis Ben Hague’s attacks powered through Vicky Coll. He won 11-6, 11-5, 11-8. The other semi was one of attrition with Jack Smith’s determination and mixture of attack and defence out manoeuvring Pat. Jack came back from 2-0 down to win in 5, 10-12, 4-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-5.
The final was a repeat of the group match between team mates Jack Smith and Ben Hague. But the result was different this time. In a display of consistent and varied attack Ben overcame Jack’s less effective attacks and inconsistent defence. Ben won 11-6, 11-6, 12-10.
Ben had started this, his first competitive season, in the 2AS division but had been drafted into Jack’s team after Christmas to bolster numbers and now has won the division 3 title. As John Birkin has said; one to watch for in the future.
