More Titles for Wyn Williams

In the Oswestry Table Tennis Championships, it was a resounding success for Wyn Williams who took the Open singles, Vets and Doubles titles.

Wyn Williams has now won the individual singles title for the last three years and has accumulated 8 wins overall.  Williams however, has still to catch Clive Roberts record from the 1970’s and 80’s. Roberts then won the title 7 years in a row, and then 3 years again after a two year gap.

In the Open Singles the four cedes all made it through to the semi-finals although Jeremy Chavez (2 cede) had a hard match 11-8, 9-11, 12-10 against Dylan Evans in the first round. Tim Mytton (4 cede) dropping a set to Pete Scott in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals the number 1 & 2 Williams & Chavez went to the final.  In the final the experience of Williams dominated the Chavez forehand with some wonderful backhand blocks, giving a straight 3 sets win to Williams.

The division 2 singles had its best entry for a number of years. Martin Stringer in the top half of the draw had a comfortable win over Patrick Lewers, but a sterner test from Luke Parker 14-12, 14-12. In the bottom half of the draw Aaron Morris had wins over Nas Nasser & Geraint Thomas.  The final was dominated by Aaron Morris and Stringer could not pull back early leads that Morris took in both sets.

In the handicap event preliminary round, club mates Andrzej Bartoszek and Geraint Thomas met in a thriller. Bartoszek winning 8-11, 12-10, 13-11. Wyn Williams was given a very hard match in his first round by Steve Parker. The two left handers fought out an 11-8, 9-11, 14-12 result to Williams. The handicaps were making for close matches with most going to the full 3 sets.  Phil Langford reached the semi-final with wins over Dylan Evans, Olly Harris & Mike Taylor, where he found Williams on top form.  In the bottom half of the draw Jack Hughes had wins over Luke Parker & Andrzej Bartoszek, and Tim Mytton had wins over Nas Nasser & Jeremy Chavez.  The 3 point start that Hughes had was not enough to trouble Mytton. In the final Mytton with a 3 point start played a very controlled game against the experienced Williams. It went very close with Mytton taking the title 9-11, 12-10, 11-9, and inflicting Williams only defeat of the night.

The doubles were from drawn pairings. Steve Parker & Martin Stringer reached the final after a hard semi-final verses Bartoszek & Jason Hughes 14-12 in the third set.  Wyn Williams with his partner Geraint Thomas reached the final after knocking out Jim Reeves & Mike Taylor in the semi-final. Williams & Thomas were always just ahead and took the final 11-9, 11-9.

The consolation singles for first round losers went to Steve Parker with the defeat of Olly Harris in the final 11-8, 13-11

The final competition was the Vets for over 40’s.  Steve Parker made it to the semi-final, but then had to scratch from the event. This saw Wyn Williams up against Jason Hughes (+3 ). The three point were not enough to stop Williams in his fine form, Williams taking the final 11-8, 13-11.

The organiser would like to thank all participants and apologises for the late finish. This has already been discussed by the committee for next year, and if the entrants remains similar, then the Vets competition will be dropped to allow an earlier finish.

Williams Retains Title

In the main event of the Table Tennis Championships held this week at Morda,  Wyn Williams of Llanfair Caereinion retained his open singles title. Three of the four main cedes, Wyn Williams, Jeremy Chavez, and Jason Hughes all made it to the semi-finals but Glyn Jones was surprisingly beaten by Clive Jones in the first round 11-8, 14-16, 11-9.  Andrezej Bartoszek was the surprise semi-finalist after knocking Clive Jones out in the quarter-finals 11-3, 11-7. In the semi-final the number one and two seeds were dominant with Williams taking the final in three straight sets over Jeremy Chavez.

In the Division 2 singles there was a poor turnout of players but the semi-final between Oliver Harris and Jack Hughes produced an excellent match. Although going to the more experienced Harris 11-9, 11-7, the two juniors played some fine attacking strokes. In the final, Harris came out on top, beating Gerraint Thomas 11-9, 11-4.

The handicap event gave each player an equal opportunity to win. There were first close round wins for Andrezej Bartoszek over Gerraint Thomas, and Dylan Evans over Phil Langford. But the two star matches were Jack Hughes defeat of Wyn Williams 11-9, 13-11, 11-3 and Clive Jones defeat of Tim Mytton 11-7, 7-11,11-7.  Jason Hughes, Dylan Evans, Jack Hughes & Jeremy Chavez all progressed to the semi-finals.  Jason Hughes (+2) out pointed his fellow Morda team mate Jeremy Chavez 11-5, 11-8. In the other semi, fellow Criftins juniors Jack Hughes (+3) and Dylan Evans did battle; Evans eventually winning 11-5, 7-11, 11-6. The final played over 5 sets saw Evans (+1) take the match 10-12, 11-6,11-7,11-7.

In the Doubles partners were draw based on ability and then handicapped. There appeared to be some good pairings, Jonathan Dyke & Wyn Williams (Dyke having won last year with Dylan Evans), Jeremy Chavez & Oliver Harris, Clive Jones & Andrezej Bartoszek (Team Members at Caereinion).  The first of these pairings to falter was Harris & Chavez who were defeated by Jones & Bartoszek in the first round. Jones & Bartoszek however lost in the semi-finals to Jack Hughes & Jim Reeves 11-8, 6-11, 17-15 with each side have the chance to take the deciding point. Williams & Dyke made it through to the final after a close first round to Langford & Mytton and an easier match in the semi-final over Jason Hughes & Thomas. In the Final Dyke & Williams eventually overcame Jack Hughes and Reeves 11-7,8-11,11-6.

In the Veterans competition Wyn Williams (-4) eventually overcame Jim Reeves 11-4, 8-11, 12-10 in the semi-final before taking the title in the final over Jason Hughes.

The consolation for those defeated in their first match in the open singles, gave players another title to go for. In the first round fellow Criftins players Tim Mytton & Jonathan Dyke had a close match with Mytton winning through. Similarly the Criftins pair of Oliver Harris & Dylan Evans with Harris winning 19-17, 12-10. Glyn Jones moved through to the final with a win over Tim Mytton, and in the other half of the draw, Harris defeated Phil Langford.  The final between Jones (-3) and Harris (+1) was a ding-dong match. Eventually Harris winning 8-11, 13-11, 11-9.
