Oldham Table Tennis League Report for week 8 – W/C 31st October 2016.

 

 

Division 2

 

In Division 2 of the Oldham and District Table Tennis League, two unbeaten teams met at Honeywell and the home C team defeated top of the league Unison B by 7-3. Pete Fowler was outstanding winning all 3 sets and was well supported with two each from Lukasz Maciejewski and Tommy Ryan. For Unison, match secretary Jacob Reilly-Cooper was also impressive winning two and the doubles with Andrew Tarpey.

 

By recording a 7-3 victory over Hyde A, Hollinwood B moved to the top of the league above Unison, thanks to trebles from Ped McKinstrey and Kim Lee.

 

After a poor start to the season, Honeywell D made it three wins on the trot with a fine 8-2 win at Coldhurst B. Mike McNulty (3) led the way with Pete Buckley and Brian Higgins winning two each.

 

In a mid-table clash Hyde B and Hollinwood C shared the spoils in a 5-5 draw.

 

Division 1

 

Coldhurst A recorded an excellent 5-5 draw at home to Hollinwood A. Steve Barber won two whilst the two Simons, King and Walsh won one each and the doubles. A Colin Boardman treble and Gabriel Wilding double replied for the visitors.

 

Glodwick, Birley Moss and Saddleworth B all had big wins against Honeywell A (9-1) Werneth (9-1)and Unison A (8-2) respectively.

 

Rosehill won their first match of the season beating Uppermill A 6-4 thanks to a treble from Kevin Rothwell. Gary Crossley bagged two for the ‘mill’ 

 

Division 3

 

Leaders Deaf Club A consolidated their position with a good 7-3 win at third placed Uppermill B thanks to a treble for Ian Cockcroft, a brace from Dave Varney and a single from Gordon Jennings. Mark Simpson (2) and Jack Dunning (1) replied.

 

Second placed Unison C kept the pressure on with a 9-1 win over bottom team Pollards A.

 

Without a win from the first 5 matches, Honeywell E had an excellent 6-4 victory over Unison D in a tremendous match. A treble from Abby Griffith and two from veteran Bernard Davies led the way whilst Josh Hudson replied with two for the visitors. Five of the sets went to five games with numerous deuce games and Sophie Newton could have won all three singles on another day –she had a match point against Abby- but ended up just winning the doubles with Josh.  

 

Division 4

 

Mass Khan’s treble for Thornham CC paved the way for an excellent 6-4 win over previously second placed Hollinwood F. He was supported by Andrew Micklethwaite and Jason Wild who both won one each whilst Sasi Venkataramanan and David Greenwood recorded braces for Hollinwood.

 

Top versus bottom saw leaders Uppermill C beat Owls B 8-2 whilst Owls A’s 5-5 draw at Hollinwood E took them up to second place. All six players contributed, Colin Ogden (2), Ian Ross (1) and Alex Torkington (1) for Owls and James Collier (3) Lauren Brassington (1) and Barry Collier (1) for the ‘wood’. 

 

Unison E had a good 8-2 win at Deaf Club C thanks to trebles from Mike O’Gara and Jacob Sharp and a brace from Barry Fordham.

 

Division 5

 

Leaders Denshaw A were made to fight all the way by 4th placed Unison F in a 6-4 victory. Andrew Tyas, Dave Renton and Gary Kershaw won two each whilst Brian Eaton, Jamall Akhter and Angelo Robles won one each for Unison.

 

Owls C beat Denshaw B 7-3 thanks to a treble from Ruth Buckley and two each from Roy Downing and Sudip Chaterjee. The reply came from Gary Kershaw with a brace.

In a rearranged match Owls C drew 5-5 at second top Hollinwood G with Downing and Buckley recording two wins each whilst Pete Chappell trebled for the home team.

 

Pollards B beat bottom club Coldhurst D 7-3 with wins from David Murphy (3) Walter Marcinkiw (2) and Alan Nightingale (1). Andy Pogson (2) and Frank Corlett (1) replied for the visitors.

 

In the remaining mid table clash, Our Lady’s beat Hollinwood H 6-4 thanks mainly to a treble from Mark Englander.
