Halfway through the season, and the leaders in Division 1
have changed again with Ambleside E regaining the top spot having won their
last 3 matches, including a good 7-3 win against Stockingford C, the team which
had taken the top spot from them. Jess Birbeck helped herself to a maximum on
the night. They then followed this up with a further 2 match wins with Sohail
Caratella making a maximum in each match. Ambleside have 65 points, but snapping
at their heels is Ajax Wolvey C who are only 1 point behind the leaders, but they
have had some close matches where they almost lost their undefeated tag. They
beat Stockingford B narrowly 6-4 with Town Champion Paul Calloway making a
maximum to help the team, as he also did this in their next match against Ajax
Wolvey D, which they only drew 5-5. Paul retains his 100% success rate in the
league with these wins.

Stockingford C & NALGO A are in 3rd and 4th
position on 55 and 53 points respectively, but their crunch match against each
other had to be postponed just before Christmas So they both have a match in
hand against the 2 teams above them. NALGO had a couple of fairly easy wins
with Dave Daniels achieving a maximum in both matches, and Stockingford C met
their B team and ran out 8-2 winners, with Paul Lucas saving the 2 points for
the B team on the night, which leaves then in 5th position heading
into Christmas.

Ajax Wolvey D follow Stockingford and they have had a couple
of tough matches against the leading teams as mentioned above, but they benefitted
against Crescent B who couldn’t field a team so they had a walkover as a
result. The 2 Crescent teams A & B follow them and they both met the team
below them, NOMADS and both ran out winners, leaving NOMADS still looking for
that elusive first win of the season. Both Crescent teams also played the
bottom placed team, Ambleside H but the Crescent B team lost 6-4, with Lee
Bennett achieving a maximum, but the Crescent A team took revenge the following
week beating Ambleside 8-2 with Shoyeb Memon helping himself to a maximum.

NALGO B continue progress towards the Division 2 title, and
remain undefeated, although they came close to losing their 100% win record
when they came up against 3rd place Ambleside F in a match that
could have gone either way with 8 out of the 10 sets  going to 5 games in each, and Ambleside’s
doubles pairing of Matt Jackson and Joe Wright winning the final doubles to
make the match level at the end. It was a long and close match evidenced by the
time it finished which was at 11.15pm! Along the way the NALGO players, Pete
White and Steve Brough lost their 100% records. The following week the NALGO
team met 2nd placed Stockingford A, and had a very narrow win
against them 6-4 with Kevin Edwards of NALGO making a maximum, and continuing
unbeaten so far in this league.

NALGO B, therefore, lead the league with 79 points and are
followed by Stockingford A and Ambleside F on 67 and 64 points respectively,
and in 4th spot are Ajax Wolvey B still in contention with 63
points. Apart from the close match with the league leaders, Stockingford A had
2 easy wins against Ajax Wolvey E and Ambleside B running out 10-0 winners in
each match with Phil Chesters achieving a maximum in both matches.

As mentioned above Ambleside F had an eventful night against
the leaders but they also had an amazing result in their win against Ajax
Wolvey F beating them 8-2. That sounds fairly uneventful, but in the final
doubles match the familiar Ambleside doubles pairing of Matt Jackson and Joe
Wright came up against Steve Hobley and John Steer who they beat 3-0 but in the
final game of that set the score was 27-25 - for those not used to the scoring
system in table tennis a match is normally won at 11!! (not 21 as used to be
the case)

Ajax Wolvey B had 2 easy wins too against their own F team
and Ambleside C, with maxima in both matches for Graham Bolstridge, and in
their 9-1 defeat by the league leaders NALGO, he also took the undefeated
record off NALGO’s Mike Harker.

After the top 4 teams there is a significant gap to the
teams below which are headed by Ajax Wolvey F on 36 points, followed by 4
Ambleside teams, A,C,B & D respectively and in bottom spot is Ajax Wolvey
E. Some teams notched their first win of the season leading up to the half way
point with Ambleside D beating the Wolvey E team by 8-2, and Stefan Stawski
achieving a maximum, and Ambleside B narrowly beating their A team by 6-4 with
2 wins apiece for Dave Jowett and Alex Kind, and they also had an even match
against their D side running out a 5-5 draw. Ambleside B finished off the year
with an 8-2 win against Wolvey E with Dad, Richard Costall showing his 2 sons
Tom and Oliver how to do it by achieving a maximum.
