Northumbria Winter League - weekly league report 7 November 2021

This week was a spare week in the season to allow for re-arranged games. There were only six games across the four divisions.

In the Premier Division there was just one game between Cramlington Stingers and NECA A. NECA won the game 7-3 and moved to the top position in the league. Lee Tinkler and Martin Schapira both won their three games. The Stingers needing some points to close the gap at the bottom of the table secured three points with wins by Steve Pearce and Gareth Pearson over Ken Lee. Steve Pearce then combined with Nigel Rodgers to secure a good win in the doubles over Lee Tinkler and Martin Schapira

The Division 2 there was all Cramlington match between Cramlington Swifts and Cramlington Reivers. The Swifts took a 4-2 lead but the Reivers then won the last four singles games to win the match 6-4. Reiver’s Berne McArdle continued his unbeaten start to the season winning three games supported by Steve Ralph who won two games and Joe Swinburn who won one game. The Swift’s points came from Richard Williamson and Philip Teah-Smith. There was a close game between Tyneside B and Cramlington Spartans which ended in a 6-4 win for Tyneside. The match had started well for Tyneside with Jim Robertson beating Leo Conn who came back from 2 down only to lose 11-9 in the fifth end. The Spartans went into a 3-2 lead only to be pegged back by Tyneside who won the next three games to lead 5-3. Leo Conn then beat Chas Robertson to set up a last game decider which saw Jim Robertson beat Jamie Hall 14-12 in the fifth end to secure the win for Tyneside. In their second match of the week the Spartans proved too strong for Ouston C with 10-0 win; Leo Conn, Sam Nair and Jamie Hall all winning their three games.

In Division 3 the top placed team Saints were in action and consolidated their position with a 7-3 win over Cramlington Magpies. Disappointingly the Magpies lost three games for fielding an ineligible player due to the step-up rules. The Saints points came from two wins from John Cook and one from Ken Greatbatch with the pair combing to win the doubles. Magpies secured three points with Joel Dyter securing wins over the experienced Ken Greatbatch and Ray Joynson; and Chris Cockcroft beating Ray Joynson. With Tyneside C not playing Stocksfield C moved into second place with an 8-2 win over Cramlington Lions. Mark Perrin and Richard Rayfield both won three games for Stocksfield. John McKenna and Freddie McKenna secured the points for the Cramlington team with wins over David Crompton both of which were close five end games.
