Northumbria Winter League - weekly league report 21 November 2021

In the Premier Division there was a straightforward 10-0 win for Newcastle University over Tyneside A which saw the University team move into second place. The University team of Chris Lui, Ben Savage and Daria Dubenko proving too strong for their opponents. Cramlington Stingers secured their first win of the season with a 9-1 victory over Prudhoe United Services A, the win saw the Cramlington team move off bottom spot. Cramlington’s Nigel Rodgers and Steve Pearce won three games and combined to win the doubles; Gareth Pearson won two games only losing to Mark O’Connor in a close five end game.

In Division 1 there was all Mount match between Mount C and Mount B which saw the B team secure a straightforward 10-0 win. The Mount B team of Dave Cutler, Dean Eadington and Lee Eadington proved too strong for their opponents and the win saw them consolidate top spot in the division. Cramlington Falcons played out a 5-5 draw with Old England Nomads. The Old England team had taken a 5-3 lead with two wins for Lynne Herrington and Alan Atkinson but the Falcons won the last two games with Anth Doyle beating Joe Perrin and Oliver Ho beating Lynne Herrington to secure the draw. With the Falcons faltering Ouston A moved back into second place with a 9-1 win over bottom placed Cramlington Tigers. The Tigers were only able to field two players but Lynsey Storey played extremely well securing a notable win over Bernie Morris and the two games against Harry Veitch and Jon Mawson both went to five ends with both Ouston players winning 11-9 in the fifth end. The game between Prudhoe United Services B and Stocksfield A ended in a 6-4 win for the Prudhoe team. The teams were closely matched through the first 8 games with the score being 4-4 but in the ninth game Jordan Dove beat Neil Forsyth to secure his third win and player of the match. In the final game Ryan Campbell was down 2-1 in ends against Alex Holliday but won the last two ends to secure his third win and the win for this team.

In Division 2 there was a bottom of the table clash between Ouston C and Mount D which the Mount team won 9-1. Howard McCain was player of the match winning three games, Gary Anderson won three games and Dave Swan won two games. Only Ouston’s Dave Nichols was able to secure a point with a win over Dave Swan. With Brandon Bravehearts faltering against Cramlington Swifts, Tyneside B moved back to top spot after an 8-2 win over Ouston B. Tyneside’s James Moore was player of the match winning three games with Jim Robertson and Chas Robertson both winning two games. Ouston’s Michael Lyons had been undefeated this season up to this game but lost to James Moore and Jim Robertson but did beat Chas Robertson; Outson’s other point came from a close win for Jamie Milroy over Jim Robertson which was 11-9 in the fifth end. Brandon Bravehearts game against Cramlington Swifts ended in a 5-5 draw thanks to Jamie Westwater who was player of the match with three wins. In the all Cramlington match between Cramlington Spartans and Cramlington Reivers the Spartans won 6-4 with their players of Sam Nair, Leo Conn and Jamie Hall all winning two games each but player of the match went to the Reivers’ Bernie McArdle despite being on the losing team won three games.

In Division 3 with Stocksfield not playing Tyneside C moved to top spot in the division with a 9-1 win over Cramlington Magpies. The young Cramlington players were no match for the experienced Tyneside players with Don Catley and Daniel Foster both winning three games; Ian Armstrong won two games only losing to Cramlington’s Joel Dyter in a close five end game. There were two all Cramlington matches this week. Cramlington Cobras beat Cramlington Lions 6-4 with Joe Hastings being player of the match with three wins and Alan Hedley two wins. For the Lions Dan Harrison and John McKenna both won one game and Freddie McKenna won two games. Cramlington Dragons beat the Cramlington Dragons 7-3 with Daniel Gazerani-Lopez and Jonathan Javita-Calle both winning three games and combining to win the doubles.
