BUDEHAVEN B’s scintillating start to the season in Division Two of the North Cornwall Table Tennis League, shows no signs of slowing down as they thrashed previously unbeaten Crackington B last Thursday night.
Crackington had won 7-3 and 8-2 in their first two games but were on the wrong end of an 8-2 scoreline as visiting Bude increased their advantage at the top to 11 points, although all of the chasing pack apart from Budehaven C have games in-hand.
David Sillifant managed to eke out three victories for the visitors — all by three sets to one, while Nathan Jukes and the previously unbeaten Ashley Taylor both won two of their outings, despite losing thrilling five-setters to Ross Paynter, who maintained his good early season form since coming back into the sport.
Budehaven C are currently second in the table but had to settle for a 5-5 draw at Launceston on Wednesday evening.
Visiting skipper Anthony Ward was the star of the show, collecting three victories, including getting the better of his opposite number Steve Parsons in a last-set decider.
Parsons and Karen Horrell both beat Andrew Ward and Chris Mill, who each defeated Lois Atkin.
Altarnun got their season up and running with an 8-2 victory at struggling North Hill B.
Paul Burden and Alex Whitfield were in terrific form for the village side, both recording three wins from three, with Whitfield winning all nine of his sets.
North Hill’s points came from the bat of David Aplin and captain, Michael Kinger but they’ve now picked up just four points from three games.
In the top tier there was just one game with Helland A taking over at the top from Budehaven A.
Helland won 8-2 at Torridge, who were playing their first game of the season.
Ingus Abolnieks and Ritchie Bartlett enjoyed perfect evenings while Mike Fisher weighed in with two points of his own.
Torridge’s victories came from David Stone and in the doubles.
The early signs in Division Three are that Budehaven E and Crackington C could be locked in a two-way battle for the title.
Budehaven E won 5-0 against their F team with Timothy Orchard and Robin Worden on duty as they dropped just one set all evening.
Budehaven D lost 4-1 at home to Helland C with Tracey Oke winning both of her outings. The visitors also won the doubles as Cayden Gill grabbed a consolation win.
Crackington C are on six points after beating Bridgerule B, 4-1.
Simon Patterson was the home side’s star man while they also earned points through Trevor Dean and in the doubles. Nick Brewer picked up Bridgerule’s point after they slipped to a 3-2 defeat at home to North Hill C in their seasonal debut a week previously.
