2016-17 Week 14 Round Up by David Sillifant
HELLAND A are the first team through to this year’s Handicap Knockout Cup final after beating fellow Division One championship hopefuls Blisland 6-3.
Helland raced into a 3-0 lead in the first round of singles as Ingus Abolniek, Mike Fisher and Ritchie Bartlett started well.
Jim Rickwood and Robert Thompson won their second ties against Fisher and Bartlett to make it 4-2 but Fisher’s victory against Kevin Tarling gave them an unassailable advantage.
Ibolniek was the star for Helland, using his headstarts in all three matches to the full.
The second semi-final between Division Three promotion chasers Bridgerule and North Hill A has been rescheduled for Friday, March 3.
This week sees the penultimate round of the league fixtures.
In Division One there are still a number of rescheduled games to fit in. League leaders Blisland host champions Budehaven A while Helland A will be confident of taking advantage of any slip-up by Blisland when they travel to Crackington A who are firmly rooted to the basement of the division.
There’s a big night for Budehaven B tonight in their final match of the season. They take on second-placed Budehaven C knowing a poor result could leave them with a realistic chance of going down.
However, the match of the night comes at Crackington where their B team take on North Hill B.
Crackington are four points from safety and require a convincing victory to realistically stay in touch, while North Hill know a big loss could cause them plenty of headaches.
Launceston, who are just four points above Crackington, make the trip to Altarnun to take on arguably the league’s best player Paul Burden.
In Division Three, North Hill D will look to do their C team a favour in the race for promotion by beating league leaders Bridgerule B.
However North Hill will win the title regardless of that result if they can win their final two fixtures 5-0.
The first of those are against bottom of the table Bridgerule C who have got just eight points so far.
