Amber is a Showstopper

On Monday the 16th of February the final of the Mansfield and District table tennis league showstoppers individual handicap competition took place at the Ravenshead Leisure centre.

From an entry of over 27 players in the preliminary round held just before Christmas the final 8 players taking to the tables were :-

Group 1. Richard Robinson, Russell Harrison, Amber Zygadlo and Paul Linfield

Group 2. Joe Zygadlo, Matt Fowkes, Graham Smith, and Graham Woodcock

Both Zygadlo’s came top in their respective groups with Joe not dropping a single game in his group. Richard Robinson and Graham Smith achieved the group’s runners up spot. Graham narrowly beating Matt Fowkes and Graham Woodcock, for the runners up spot, on count back after all 3 finished on the same amount of points.

Amber played Graham Smith in the first Semi-final beating him 21-16, 19-21, 21-8, an achievement in itself as Amber had never beaten Graham in the past and on this occasion had to give Graham a start of 4 points. Joe played Richard in the second semi-final but was unable to overcome the handicap deficit of 12 points with Richard playing exceptionally well to win 21-14, 21-16.

In the Showstoppers Final, 17 year old Amber took the first game 21-12 over Richard. In the second game Richard played some smart table tennis pulling out all the stops to command a comfortable lead and with the score at 15-20 it seemed all was set for a third and final game. With determined tenacity and courage Amber pulled back point after point to turn it around beating Richard 22-20 and with that the match.

For the losing group finalists a plate Draw took place with Graham Woodcock beating Matt Fowkes 21-19 in the 3rd set.
