Jarvis goes furthest in Sweden

Tom Jarvis was a quarter-finalist and Liam Pitchford reached the last 16 of the Safir International event in Sweden.

Jarvis was seeded 14th and beat Kun Ting Beh of Singapore 3-1 in his first match, following up with victories over Toshinaga Yoshida of Japan (3-2) and France’s Jules Cavaille (3-1) before going out 3-2 (11-7, 13-11, 7-11, 9-11, 11-5) to ninth seed Satoshi Aida of Japan in the quarters.

Pitchford, seeded second, had 3-1 victories over Dominic Song Jun Koh of Singapore and Sweden’s Johan Barius before exiting to 10th seed Li Yijie in three games in the last 16.

The event runs alongside the Swedish Junior & Cadet Open and a number of younger English players competed, as did a contingent from Fusion TTC in London.

In the Men’s Singles, James Smith reached the second round, having won his group and then beaten Marcus Lindkvist in the first round. He was defeated 3-0 by Jens Lundquist.

Shayan Siraj, Joe Cope, Sam Wilson, Naphat Boonyaprapa, Jamal Dennison and Ethan Walsh all went out in the first round having come through the group stage – Siraj and Walsh as group winners.

Alex Ahl, Naphong Boonyaprapa, Josh Bruce, Dale Campbell, Ben Piggott, Felix Thomis and Darius Xavier all went out in the group stage.

In the women’s event, Denise Payet and Jasmin Wong got through to the knockout rounds but both fell at the first hurdle. Ruby Chan, Evie Collier, Tiana Dennison, Megan Gidney, Amy Marriott, Mille Rogove and Raquel Sao Pedro all went out in the group stage.

Jarvis also went furthest in the Under-21s, being knocked out in the last 16. Cope and Walsh each won their first-round matches but were eliminated in the second round, Cope by Yukihiro Takezaki, the eventual champion.

Wong, Rogove and Sao Pedro reached the second round in the Under-16 Girls.
