Two out of three for England in Luxembourg

England’s men won their final group match at the European Championships in Luxembourg today, but the women’s team were narrowly defeated by familiar foes Slovenia, before bouncing back to beat Israel.

David McBeath put the men in front against Ireland, defeating Ashley Robinson 3-1, but Paul McCreery’s surprise 3-2 win over Sam Walker made it all square.

However, victories for Helshan Weerasinghe over Gavin Maguire and Walker over Robinson completed a 3-1 overall victory.

England’s women had defeated Slovenia 3-2 home and away in the qualifying campaign, and today’s match again went the distance, but with a different outcome.

Alex Galic’s victories over Kelly Sibley and Tin-Tin Ho in matches 1 and 4 sandwiched wins for Ho over Manca Fajmut and Karina Le Fevre over Ana Tofant, leaving it at 2-2 as Sibley faced Fajmut. And it was the Slovenian who prevailed 3-1, recovering from losing the opening game.

Le Fevre was narrowly beaten in the first match against Israel, but Ho’s double and a win for Maria Tsaptsinos saw England home 3-1.
