DALLAM B RULE IN DIVISIONAL SHIELD

Dallam B put their league woes behind them to win the top flight divisional shield at Dallam School Sports Hall on Sunday afternoon. The event, which is handicapped and sees clubs represented in teams of two, attracted a large playing contingent from all three divisions.

Dallam B’s duo of Tom Carling and James Parkinson progressed to the final courtesy of a 12-point victory over Crook A, a 36 point triumph over Natland A and a 20 point success against Natland C. Dallam B’s opponents in the final were Burton B’s Stephen and Peter Baxendale, who dispatched Dallam A and Natland B en route to the final. In the final Dallam B’s Carling and Parkinson started with a 75 point advantage over Burton’s Baxendale brothers, but after the three singles matches this had been reduced to a slender lead of just 27 points in Dallam’s favour. An excellent performance from Carling against Stephen Baxendale in the penultimate singles match meant that Burton could only afford to lose ten points in the last doubles encounter of the match. This proved to be a bridge too far and Dallam won the second set of the doubles to ensure an overall victory by 15 points.

Dent A’s Steve Hawley and Wayne Gardner were victorious in the Division 2 shield event by overhauling Burton D’s Shelley Rhodes and George Pickering by a score line of 159-100 in a routine final. Dent started the encounter with a 15 point advantage, which increased to twenty-six points by the time the doubles came. With little hope of victory, Burton conceded the match feeling it was unlikely they could win with only the loss of 6 points, giving Dent the title.

In the Division 3 shield event, Natland F’s George and Ed Pickthall took the title with club mates Natland E- represented by Rinaldo Colombi and Tim Marris- finishing as runners up.
