IBIS WRAP UP DIVISION 1 TITLE

Ibis were confirmed as Division 1 champions in the Kendal and District League, after whitewashing Natland B 10-0, wrapping up the title in emphatic fashion.

Ibis’s trio of Steve Dixon, James McGrath and Trevor Nicholson were in rampant form as they raced to a 4-0 lead without dropping a single set. The encounter maintained its one sided tone, as the closest Natland got to getting on the score-sheet was Roger Pimblett’s narrow 13-11 defeat in an absorbing deciding set, after having a 2-0 sets advantage being wiped out. The table topping Kendal side rounded off a brilliant season when Nicholson and McGrath teamed up in the doubles to record an 11-4, 11-4, 8-11, 11-9 victory against Pimblett and Bernard Pickthall. The defeat meant Natland finished in sixth place, having won ten out of their twenty-one matches.

Grayrigg were relegated to Division 3, after a 6-4 defeat at the hands of Dent A. Jon Cooper provided stiff resistance for Grayrigg, as he earned his side three wins. Dent A confirmed their fifth success of the season and a creditable seventh place finish, thanks to two wins apiece from Eddie Smith, Pete and Steve Hawley.

Crook C were the second side to be relegated from Division 2, and finished rock bottom after also losing out 6-4 to Dent A. Tony Cousins battled tirelessly for Crook, edging out Eddie Smith and Pete Hawley 12-10 and 11-9, both in the crucial fifth set, yet this was not good enough for his side to escape the clutches of relegation.

The only other event to be decided is the Knockout Cup, which sees Division 3 side Natland E go up against top flight Glaxo B and Natland A face Dent A for a place in the final. Dent qualified for the semi-final after a nail-biting 5-4 triumph against Grayrigg A.
