“Joola Plymouth chairman Kevin Buddell praises volunteers after club wins at Herald sports awards”
CHAIRMAN Kevin Buddell paid tribute to an army of volunteers who helped Joola Plymouth table tennis club win a trophy at the Herald’s Sports Personality of the Year awards evening.
Joola Plymouth Table Tennis Club have picked up the community club of the year award at the Pavilions for the incredible amount of work they do with grass-roots table-tennis players in the Plymouth area.
Debbie & Paul Whiting attended the high profile presentation along with our key volunteers Jan Marshall, Elaine Short, Andy Strike, John Bone, Paul Evans, Roger Bowkett, Graham & Cheryl Pearson who collectively picked up the award on behalf of the club.
The club has thrived since a superb table-tennis training and playing facility was built at Eggbuckland Community College in 2013.
Buddell said: “We are overwhelmed as a club to win the award – it’s been a good couple of years, not only on the community side, but also the performance side by the players.
“A lot of volunteers have put a lot of work into the club to make it a success and it’s still going from strength to strength.”
The club is hosting a training camp in March for England’s youth development squad.
And, said Buddell, a national coaches’ conference is also being held at Eggbuckland – the first time it has been convened anywhere except Lilleshall.
Buddell said: “Grassroots table tennis is massive at the moment – we usually hold our schools under-11s tournament with the under 13s, under 16s and under 19s.
“But we’re having to hold it separately this year because the large number of under 11s entries which has doubled since last year. It’s phenomenal.”
A massive thankyou to everybody involved !!!!!
