JAKE JUMPS LIKE A JACK IN A BOX

In the top division of the Fun 88 sponsored Isle of Man Table Tennis League a close match between second-placed Strathallan and the defending champions Copy Shop enabled Travellers to leapfrog into within two points of top spot.  

A slip up from the Division Two league leaders Peel A saw second-placed Tower B and Surestrike Ramsey B close the gap to ten and twelve points respectively.  Both also have two games in hand over the table toppers.

Surestrike Ramsey C increased their lead on top of Division Three whilst their D team colleagues struggle at the bottom. Second-placed Travellers D were held to a draw by the youngsters from fifth-placed Copy Shop C.

Peel C are now just two points behind the leaders Copy Shop D and have a game in hand. Third-placed Copy Shop could draw level at the top as they also have a game in hand. Fourth-placed Surestrike Ramsey E fielded three brothers. The youngest, Jake Morris aged 7 was jumping around like a jack in box and made some fine returns.

Division One

Tower A (0) Travellers A (9)

A good night for second-placed Travellers with hat-tricks all round from Mike Dunning, Mark Johnson and Malcolm Cummings (below).

Tower A are now 22 points adrift at the bottom but they have only played seven matches compared to eight for Surestrike Ramsey A  and nine for the top three teams.

An impressive run from Sean Drewry sees him maintain his unbeaten run this season for Copy Shop A.

Paul Corran brought the league leaders over the winning line by earning a brace.

Their third player was Brian Crellin but he withdrew after losing 5/11, 10/12, 11/9, 11/13 to Mason McLarney. This gave Strathy two more points so with Julian Briercliffe’s 12/10, 11/9, 13/11 win over Corran Strathallan remain in touching distance of top spot.

Division Two

Surestrike Ramsey B (4) Tower B (6)

Tim Baker remained unbeaten for third-placed Tower and he and Chris Holmes won the doubles. However, Tower fought back; Dave Parsons, Dario Mazzotta and Mike Bayley all secured braces to give Tower an important victory and keep them in second-place.

Peel B (4) Travellers C (6)

Sasha Thomas started sixth-placed Peel off with two victories which was matched by their super substitute Tiernan Garvey from Division Four. Paul Mathieson-Nelson anchored fifth-placed Travellers’ fight back with a hat-trick so a point apiece from Dave Buck and Jack Mathieson-Nelson saw them draw level.  The Nelson’s found victory with a four sets win in the doubles.

Travellers B (7) Peel A (3)

A strong performance from fifth-placed Travellers with both Tommy Cowin and Stu Douglas taking two points followed by an impressive hat-trick from Colin Brown. Malc Lewis earned a consolation brace for the league leaders before he and Maggie Mulhern claimed the doubles.

Division Three

Surestrike Ramsey C (9) Surestrike Ramsey X (1)

The C team swept away their opponents in the derby and were just short of a clean sweep. Tyler Hannay denied them by defeating Frank Feeney 11/6, 11/9, 11/5. Feeney won his remainder whilst both Jack Craik and Wendy Hogan notched three points and also delivered the doubles. The league’s oldest player, fencing master Henry De Silva, was foiled in his attempt to get on the score sheet.

This was a superb performance from third-placed Tower as they breezed past their seventh-placed opponents. Mike Chapman, Barry Jenkins and Margaret Forsyth all won three before Chapman and Jenkins claimed the doubles.

Travellers D (5) Copy Shop C (5)

There was a good start from Travellers in an important match for their promotion hopes. Adrian Tinkler and Jackie Gill both won two followed by a point from Maurice Campbell. Chris Aspden helped pull it back with a hat-trick for fifth-placed Copy Shop C. Zac Walker earned another before the pair secured the doubles 11/4, 11/7, 9/11, 12/10 to earn a draw.

Division Four

IOM JD 1 (3) St Ninian’s B (7)

A no show gifted fifth-placed St Ninian’s an early lead which they built on with Archie Walter and Luke Hegarty winning their remaining two matches. William Shooter and Jake Levine earned a point each then won a very tight doubles match which ended 11/9 in the final frame.

IOM JD North (1) Peel C (9)

A good performance from second-placed Peel with Tiernan Garvey and Louis Faragher both winning hat-tricks. Callan Reed was kept at two points by a good win from William Dalugdugan. Peel went on to take the doubles.

Copy Shop E (4) Copy Shop D (6)

A tight derby which saw the E team take the lead through a win from Cameron Dudley which Josh Dudley increased with a brace. Kitty Thomas equalised with a hat-trick for the D team.

Pat Halliwell ignored her painful knee to secure two more and Libby Quaggin got the important win that keeps them in top spot. Cameron Dudley and Leo Doyle claimed the doubles 9/11, 8/11, 11/8, 12/10, 11/6 but the match was already lost.

IOM JD 2 (8) Surestrike Ramsey E (2)

A great performance from the development team with two hat-tricks, one from Oliver Ashe the other from Lauren Allwright. Micah Clarricoats also notched a victory before combining with Ashe to take the doubles. Thomas Morris and his brother Oliver both secured singles victories for fourth-placed Surestrike.

Their younger brother Jake Morris (7) leapt around the table to make some fine returns but his valiant efforts went unrewarded.  

JUAN MOOREThis gave Strathy two more points so with Julian Briercliffe’s 12/10, 11/9, 13/11 win over Corran, Strathallan remain in touching distance of top spot.
