League Report 16 October 2016

THREE TEAMS TIE AT THE TOP

Following this week’s results there is now a three way tie at the top of Division One in the Fun 88 sponsored Isle of Man Table Tennis League. Strathallan had a rest week but with Travellers A beating Copy Shop A 5-4 all three teams now have 42 points although Travellers have played an extra game.

In Division Two Peel A now have a 14 point lead but second-placed Tower B have two games in hand as do Surestrike Ramsey B in fourth-place. At the bottom, Copy Shop B have now strengthened their squad as is evidenced by their narrow loss to the league leaders.

Travellers D appear to be the team to beat in Division Three. They are the only team in all four divisions who have not yet sustained a loss this season. Surestrike Ramsey C remain in top spot but Travellers are just three points behind with a game in hand.

There were no changes in league positions in Division Four although Peel C now have a five point margin over Copy Shop D. Potentially, Copy Shop E could leap-frog their club-mates in the weeks to come as they are just three points behind with a vital game in hand.

DIVISION ONE

Arbory (5) Surestrike Ramsey A (4)

Surestrike took an early lead when ‘new dad’ Adam Teare hit a hat-trick which Juan Moore added to with a win over Kieran Chan. Arbory responded with a brace each from Jason Quirk and Mike Tamarov plus the decisive win in four sets for Chan against Rhys Yardley. However, the closest match of the night was undoubtedly Tamarov’s 8/11, 11/9, 12/10, 9/11, 13/11 cliff hanger against Moore.

Copy Shop A (4) Travellers A (5)

A point from Paul Corran and a Sean Drewry hat-trick were not enough to see the league champions home. Mark Johnson and Malcolm Cummings levelled the match leaving their team-mate Mike Dunning to win the vital point for Travellers 11/8, 4/11, 11/9, 11/6 against Adam Davies.

DIVISION TWO

Peel B (3) Tower B (7)

Mike Bayley and Dave Parsons both secured three points for third-placed Tower B and took the doubles in three close sets. Sasha Thomas, Harry Walters and Nathan Evans all won a point for sixth-placed Peel at the expense of Matt Crabtree who came closest in his 11/13, 7/11, 11/2, 11/7, 5/11 encounter with Evans.

DIVISION THREE

Surestrike Ramsay C (8) Tower C (2)

A good win from top-placed Surestrike with Jack Craik and Wendy Hogan both getting a hat-trick and they went on to secure the doubles. Mike Chapman and Barry Jenkins both claimed a point for third-placed Tower but Frank Feeney added Surestrike’s final point by beating hard-batter Margaret Forsyth 11/7, 9/11, 11/9, 10/12, 11/5.

St Ninian’s Pedro Cordoso and Matt Harvey won the doubles and two apiece including 12/10 and 17/15 final frame wins over Aspden and Billy Coulter respectively. Alex Flood then beat Coulter enabling St Ninian’s to leap-frog Copy Shop in the league.

Travellers D (10) Surestrike Ramsey D (0)

A superb performance from second-placed Travellers D with Alan Harding, Adrian Tinkler and Maurice Campbell all earning straight sets hat-tricks. Harding and Tinkler also went on to win the doubles 11/8, 11/7, 11/8 against Dylan Yardley and Leo Tomlinson.

DIVISION FOUR

Copy Shop D (10) IOM JD 1 (0)

A clean sweep for second-placed Copy Shop D with Libby Quaggin, Sophie Sheard and Kitty Thomas all hitting hat-tricks; Quaggin and Sheard also secured the doubles. However, Sam Preece nearly pulled off a shock win after pulling back to two sets all against Sheard only to fade out 8/11 in the last leg.

Surestrike Ramsey E (2) Peel C (8)

Tiernan Garvey of top-placed Peel bagged a brace alongside teammate Louis Faragher which Callan Reed topped with a hat-trick. Reed and Garvey also won the doubles. Lily Byrne and Leon Crowe both scored a consolation point for fourth-placed Surestrike E.

St Ninians B (8) IOM JD 2 (2)

Due to a no show from IOM JD 2 St Ninian’s were gifted three points which they capitalised on as Luke Hegarty and Archie Walter both won their other two matches. The pair also won the doubles. Lauren Allwright and Oliver Ashe both beat Thomas Coleman to register the points for the development team.

Copy Shop E (8) IOM JD North (2)

Josh Dudley and Leo Doyle both won a couple for third-placed Copy Shop E. Cameron Dudley topped that with a treble. The Dudley duo also delivered the doubles. The North’s William Dalugdugan played exceedingly well to beat both Josh and Doyle in four and five sets respectively. Glenn Callow had two five setters but neither he nor Charlie Callow could get on the score sheet.
