MATCH REPORT 10 FEBRUARY 2016

TOWER B

A draw between the top two teams in the Second Division of the DLP Adapted Bathrooms sponsored Isle of Man Table Tennis League enabled third-placed Travellers B to inch move just six points behind rivals Peel A as a result of their 7-3 win over bottom-placed Surestrike Ramsey C.

Top-placed Tower B had won all their previous matches but a Malc Lewis hat-trick put Peel A in pole position to cause a real upset.

Lewis and Andy McLarney were going for glory at 5-4 up in points and two sets up in the doubles, but Tower came back to snatch the draw.

Fourth-placed Copy Shop B and ninth-placed Copy Shop C were both fielding substitutes so were perhaps not too surprised to lose to fifth-placed Peel B and seventh-placed Travellers C respectively.

Eighth-placed Travellers D claimed ten walk-over points as the relegation zoned school teachers from St Ninian’s were unable to field a team due to their pre-existing holiday commitments. Unfortunately, the loss of the facilities at the NSC has caused fixture congestion and hence the need to reschedule matches over the half-term break.

DIVISION TWO

Tower B (5) Peel A (5)

It took two tie-breaks but Malc Lewis overcame Graham McFarlane 12/10, 11/4, 5/11, 11/13, 11/4 to record his hat-trick for Peel A. Maggie Mulhern and Andy McLarney took a point apiece off Barry Jenkins which ensured the draw for Peel. McFarlane and Simon Radcliffe both bagged a brace for Tower B and then came back from two sets down to deliver the doubles thus maintaining the top-placed team’s unbeaten record.

Surestrike Ramsey C (3) Travellers B (7)

Something had to give as both Paul Nelson and Chris Holmes had one hundred percent averages in the league.

Surestrike’s Holmes took the first two sets and Nelson the next two. So close were those games that the players were also level on points but in the end Nelson prevailed 9/11, 13/15, 12/10, 11/9, 11/5.

Nelson went on to claim his hat-trick and won the doubles with Mike Dunning who added two more points but lost to Holmes as did Alex Buck. Nathan Walker also beat Buck who finished off Frank Feeney in their wooden spoon decider.

Peel B (7) Copy Shop B (3)

HarryWaltersSashaThomas

Harry Walters was Peel’s hat-trick hero and his doubles partner Sasha Thomas beat Pedro Cardoso and Fraser Dorling in both the singles and the doubles.

Substitutes Cardoso and Dorling scored for Copy Shop with wins over Nathan Evans who later surprised Kevin Drewry 12/14, 11/9, 12/10, 11/7 after Drewry had upset Thomas’s hat-trick hopes.

Copy Shop C (1) Travellers C (9)

AdrianTinkler

Adrian Tinkler was taken to five sets by Copy Shop’s substitute Zac Walker and survived a fifth set tie-breaker against Zac’s older brother Max 10/12, 11/8, 11/9, 5/11, 13/11 to replicate Maurice Campbell’s hat-trick.

Max earned Copy Shop’s lonely point by beating Alan Harding in three sets but he and Joe Walters couldn’t convert another point in the doubles against Harding and Tinkler.
