LEAGUE REPORT 27 NOVEMBER 2013

As the Isle of Man Table Tennis League approaches the halfway stage of the season we have some incredibly tight battles going on for the major honours in each of the three divisions.  There is now a three-way tie in Division One between Breakaway A, Copy Shop A and Arbory while in Division Two only two points separate Travellers B and Zurich Spinners.  Meanwhile, Surestrike Ramsey B have lost their second place in Division Three to Travellers D.

So the results:

DIVISION ONE

Breakaway A 6, Foxdale A 4

Mark Johnson won three for Breakaway, Paul Corran two and Malcolm Cummings one but Foxdale were always in contention through two wins from Will Bayley, and one from David Lovelady while the doubles brought their contribution to four. Unfortunately, Marc Townsend could not turn perspiration into points. Match of the night saw Will Bayley defeat Paul Corran 13/11 in the fifth set.

Arbory A 10, Strathallan 0

This was an exceptional win for Arbory against fourth placed Strathallan but it wasn't as simple as it sounds with four matches going the distance and Arbory taking them all.  John Magnall, Jason Quirk and Mike Tamarov did the business over Andy Patterson Julian Briercliffe and Hadyn McLarney.  One particular match worthy of note was Magnall's win over McLarney which was achieved with the remarkable scoreline of 12/10, 14/12, 9/11, 9/11, 16/14.

Copy Shop A 10, Travellers A 0

Not quite as easy as the score suggests with one match going to five and four others requiring a fourth game but Ewan Watterson, Ronan McDonnell and Sean Drewry didn't make any major slip-ups against the second-bottom team of Gary Shilling, Paul Nelson and their substitute Colin Brown.

DIVISION TWO

Zurich Spinners 9, Tower B 1

Spinners took full advantage of Travellers' night off to pull themselves right behind the leaders.  No match went the distance and Colin Barron, Nigel Beattie and Tommy Cowin gave Steve Curtis, Simon Radcliffe and Heather Kennett an early night. Curtis was the only winner for Tower, defeating Colin Barron in four games.  As a result of this defeat Tower drop two places from fifth to seventh.

Travellers C 6, Surestrike Ramsey A 4

A vital win for Travellers who haul themselves out of the relegation places as a result.  Kathy Yamazaki, making a welcome return to table tennis, won two for Travellers as did Maurice Campbell and Adrian Tinkler who all beat Wael Kassim and Carl Blatcher.  It could have been even better for Travellers as they led 8/3 in the final game of the doubles but lost it 12/10. The winning point being a net cord!  Rhys Yardley was on top form for Ramsey winning his singles and the doubles.

Copy Shop C 7, Peel B 3

Copy Shop were indebted to three wins apiece from Adam Davies and Rob Sim for their victory over bottom team Peel B.  Fraser Dorling, Nathan Evans and Vishal Patel each beat George Melvin and Patel took Sim to a fifth game.  It's so tight all the way down this division that Copy Shop move up two places after this win.

Peel A 8, Tower C 2

Dave Callow put two on the board for Tower - both of them in five games - but Peel took the remainder.  Malcolm Lewis was unbeaten, with Maggie Mulhern and Mattie Evans winning two each against Mike Chapman and Margaret Forsyth. Peel now climb up from eighth to fifth.

DIVISION THREE

Surestrike Ramsey B 5, Peel C 5

The teams in first and second positions produced a tremendous match with Calvin Koske winning all his singles for Ramsey while Marcus Koske added another.  Harry Walters and Nathan Evans won two each for leaders Peel with Sasha Thomas getting the fifth at the expense of Kerenza Baker. The Koskes won the doubles to earn a 5-5 draw.  Match of the night saw Calvin defeating Walters 11/9 in the fifth.  Peel C retain their lead at the top of the table but Ramsey drop from second to fourth.

Junior Development 0, Travellers D 10

Travellers are now up to second - three points behind Peel - as a result of this win.  Juan Moore Jnr, Jack Nelson and David Buck saw them home in style.

Surestrike Ramsey C 2, Copy Shop D 8

Copy Shop are now back up to third, Kevin Drewry and Max Walker winning all their singles in straight games with Zac Walker adding another point against Oli Brew. Liam Cooper and Billy Cain got two back for Ramsey.

Breakaway C 3, Copy Shop E 7

A good win for the Copy Shop girls which moves them a place up the league table.  Freya Melvin, Pat Halliwell and Kitty Thomas each won two with wins over Kieran Lane and Jack Christian.  Joe Walters won all Breakaway's points including just pipping Pat Halliwell 11/9 in the fifth.
