TOP 12 REPORT 2012

 

 

The Annual Barry Callister Memorial Trophy, was contested at Foxdale School

last Saturday, 12 of the Islands top players lined up to try and win this highly prized trophy.

Starting in two groups of six, there were only 3 results going against the rankings, William Bayley beat Mason McLarney 11/6 11/8 11/8, Steve O’Hare overcame Adam Teare 11/8 11/7 11/7 and Tim Baker beat Andy Horne.

 

Finishing positions after the group stage saw Ronan McDonnell & Mark  Johnson topping their groups after remaining unbeaten. In Group A, Mason McLarney edged out Paul Corran for runner up slot having beaten Paul earlier in the day, 9/11 11/9 11/2 13/11 11/9. Steve O’Hare emerged runner up in Group B having only lost to Mark Johnson.

Line up in the semi finals saw Ronan up against Steve and Mason against Mark.

The youngsters had the upper hand in both matches and made their through to the final leaving Steve and Mark to fight it out for 3rdplace. Steve having already lost to Mark was determined to beat him this time and duly emerged the winner 11/8 12/10 11/9.

Playing for 5th–8thplaces were Paul Corran, Tim Baker, Adam Teare and Malcolm Cummings. Paul took the honours against Tim but didn’t have it all his own way as Tim came back from 2 sets down to push all the way to the fifth but couldn’t keep the pressure up and Paul emerged the victor.

Meanwhile Adam was having his own battle against Malcolm, he eventually emerged the winner 11/6 11/9 10/12 11/9. Paul went on to beat Adam into 5thplace and Malcolm took 7thplace leaving Tim in 8th.

The third group playing for places 9th–12thwere William Bayley, Darren Smethurst, Andy Horne and Jane Coulthurst.

William beat Darren 11/5 4/11 11/7 11/2 followed by Andy beating Jane.

Final matches saw Andy finishing in 9thplace with William, Jane and Darren in 10th11th& 12thplaces.

Having finished all the lower placing matches it was time for the final.

Ronan as last years winner was looking to hold on to the trophy, got off to a good start taking the first two ends 11/9 11/6, Mason fought back to take the 3rd11/6, the fourth end couldn’t have been closer with Ronan just edging home 13/11.

The standard of play throughout the final was excellent and these two young stars of Table Tennis will be representing the IOM at the forthcoming World Championships in Germany joined  by third player Paul Corran, the ladies team representing the IOM are Jane Coulthurst, Rebecca Bayley and Maggie Mulhern.
