Isle of Man Veterans Table Tennis Championships

Foxdale School provided the venue for some top class table tennis featuring the Island’s top veterans.

In the Over 40 Men’s singles Jason Quirk and Liam Chan both produced some impressive form to remain unbeaten in their groups en route to the semi-finals. In a repeat of their recent hard bat epic Malcolm Cummings took Chan to a deciding game while Mark Johnson did the same with Quirk.

The final group places were:  Group A - Jason Quirk, Mark Johnson, Tim Baker, Graham McFarlane and Dave Stevenson. Group B - Liam Chan, John Magnall, Malcolm Cummings, Malc Lewis and Steve Curtis.

In the semi-finals Chan overcame Johnson 13/11 13/11 11/5 while Arbory teammates Quirk and Magnall had a great match with the former coming back from two games down to edge it 7/11 6/11 12/10 11/5 12/10. The final was another close affair with Chan taking the title 8/11 11/5 11/6 9/11 11/6.

The Over 40 Men’s doubles was played on a round robin basis which resulted in Malcolm Cummings and Mark Johnson maintaining a 100% record to take the title. Liam Chan and John Magnall took the runners-up spot followed by Dave Stevenson & Tim Baker, Colin Brown & Malcolm Wenn and Steve Curtis & Malc Lewis.

The closest match in the Over 50 Men’s singles saw Malc Lewis just beat Malcolm Wenn 14/16 12/10 11/9 4/11 13/11 in the group stages. Lewis and Mark Johnson qualified from their group while Malcolm Cummings and John Magnall progressed from the other group. In the semis Cummings proved too strong for Lewis while Johnson defeated Magnall 11/9 in the fourth. The final was also decided at 11/9 in the fourth with Cummings taking the title against Johnson.

Colin Brown defeated Malcolm Wenn in four and then in a great game with Graham McFarlane he came back from 10/2 down to win 12/10 in the fifth game on his way to the Over 60 Men’s singles title. Wenn took second place thanks to a hard fought victory over McFarlane 11/9 15/13 11/9.

McFarlane didn’t go home empty handed however as he teamed up with Margaret Forsyth to claim the Mixed doubles 11/9 in the fifth against the husband and wife pairing of Malcolm and Viv Wenn.

The Over 50 and Over 60 Ladies’ singles competitions were depleted by the absence of a number of our players but Margaret Forsyth took full advantage of this by beating Viv Wenn in both events.

Time constraints meant that the Over 50 Men’s doubles was not played but will hopefully be played at a later date.

Thanks to Malc Lewis for organising a very enjoyable and competitive event.
