Week 1 press report

A fine first night for Isle of Man Table Tennis.

There were some notable bright starts as the new season got underway at the NSC.

Pat Halliwell was instrumental in the 6-4 win by Fortress over Travellers.

Paul Corran won all his three against Arbory.  Beating Mike Tamarov 3-0, Keeran Chan 3-0 and Jason Quirk by a narrow 11-8 margin in the decider.

Stu Douglas was clinical in clocking up 3 for Travellers “B” against Tower “C” and excelled to inflict defeat upon Andrew Horne in the top division fixture of Travellers “A” versus Strathallan.

For Travellers “A” Gary Shilling excelled also defeating Horne by 3-0, McLarney by 3-0 and Briercliffe by 3-2

Top billing for the most dazzling start of the night has to go to young Sean Dewry.

In the very first end for the very first match for his newly promoted Copy Shop “B” side in the first division, Sean made a clear statement of intent with an 11-0 win over a highly rated opponent (who shall remain nameless to spare blushes). Although Callow came back to take the third, Sean sealed the victory by 11-8 in the fourth.

Even  Paul Kozlowski, making his impressive debut in Isle of Man table tennis for Tower could not halt young Dewry and it took all the guile and determination of Tim Baker to deny Sean his hat trick at the business end of the deciding fifth.

Before the start of play a silence had been observed as players took time out to remember Malcolm Looker who had passed away in the close season. Malcolm was a great competitor and true sportsman. He will never be forgotten and on occasions such as this fine first night  the terrific spirit in which Malcolm relished the game will continue to be actively celebrated.
