Junior Christmas Cup Report

The Table Tennis Junior Christmas Cup was held last Saturday (10/12/11) at Centre 21 with 25 players contesting 3 age groups.

The Under 12 semi’s saw Reuben Harris taking on 2ndseed Ollie Cain, after a topsy turvey match Ollie emerged the winner 11-9 4-11 14 –12 11 –7. In the other semi George Melvin & Alex Phillips were battling it out in 4 very close games with George emerging the winner 16-18 11-7 12-10 15 –13. The final between Ollie Cain and George Melvin went the distance with George taking the honours 11-5 in the 5th.

 

The Under 14’s saw 3rdseed Ollie Cain losing the top spot in his group to Reuben Harris, so instead of a bye through the next round he was facing George Melvin again, this time Ollie took control and came through to win 11-8 9-11 11-7 11-7.

Reuben Harris was involved in another tight game when he beat Pedro Cardosa in the quarter final 5-11 13-11 11-7 11-9.

Semi final line up saw Sam Callister against Ollie Cain with Sam winning through 11-8 13-15 11-7 13 –11. Reuben Harris was up against Wael Kassim, with Wael emerging the winner 11-8 11-3 11-9.

The final was another match going down to the last rubber with Wael winning 11-9 in the 5th.

 

The Under 18’s was contested by 7 players and was played as a Round Robin.

Ollie Mitchell finished a creditable 6thhaving beaten Henry Watson into 7thplace. Vishal Patel finished in 4thplace after 2 good wins. Chris Aspden and Ollie Cain were tied for 3rdplace with 3 wins each but Chris took the honours having beaten Ollie in their group match.

The top two places were contested by the1stand 2nd seeds, Chris Holmes and Sam Callister. The third final of the day also went the distance with Chris coming back from 2 games down to win 11-9 in the fifth.

 

A big thank you from all the players, officials and parents went to Gwen Watterson for keeping everyone supplied with hot drinks and sausage and bacon baps throughout the day.

The standard of play was very high throughout the day and there were some tremendous battles from some very young players who I am sure will be a credit to the Island in future years.
