The final of the Holt Trophy took place at the George Ward Centre last week. The finalists were defending holders George Ward “B” versus this season’s league champions Goons. The Leicester side were going for a league and cup double. Both teams fielded strong sides. Clive Stretton
( GWB) defeated Ian Whetherley (Goons) to secure the first set. Jason Woodfield (Goons) overcame Danny Whittaker (GWB) in a five game set to bring the scores level. Mick Allsopp (GWB) put the Barwell side back in front beating John Sjostak (Goons) in straight games.
The fourth set would prove decisive when Stretton met Woodfield in a very tight match Stretton took the five game set 10-12, 11-7, 7-11, 11-5 & 11-4 to put G Ward B 3 sets to 1 up. Allsopp overcame Whetherley to make it 4 sets to 1 before Sjostak beat Whittaker to close the gap to 4 sets to 2.
The decisive game saw Allsopp power to victory over Woodfield to close out the match for George Ward “B”, to ensure they retained the Cup.
In the Dry Logic Cup semi-final a depleted George Ward “D” team took on RE Studios2. Despite a fine maximum from Roger Hill (GWD) , it was RE Studios who progress with a 6 sets to three win . Young Jack Bennett (GWD) took Steve Crutchley to four games before going down 9-11 in the fourth. Both Crutchley and Garry Rhodes took Hill to five game sets with the Barwell player winning on both occasions.
The conclusion to the Division 1 Table Tennis season, saw front- runners Goons cement their position as League Champions in their final matches. Strong victories over contenders Cat A by 10 sets to nil. A surprise draw away to Hugglescote Rams, a match which saw Lucky Obi (Goons) lose to Phil Jones (Rams), only his second loss of the season, one which would cost him the top spot in the averages. They took their final match away to Nalgo by 8 sets to 2 to secure the title. Jason Woodfield collecting his usual three to head the Div 1 averages with 97.56%.
Barlestone A continued to press in the latter stages of the season with a couple of good results. The defeated Queen’s C 10 sets to nil, fought out a highly entertaining draw with Cat A with Adam Pettitt collecting a useful maximum for Barlestone and in their final match beating G Ward B by 8 sets to 2 to secure second spot in the table.
Cat A despite a very good win over G ward A by 6 sets to 4 and a 9sets to 1 victory over Barlestone B were not able to pick up enough points to overtake Barlestone A for second spot. The final table sees Goons top with 169 points, well clear of Barlestone A in second spot on 145 points and Cat A third with 136 points and last year’s Champions G Ward A on 132 points.
