There was more success for the George Ward Teams in the Leicester Junior League in the second series of matches held recently. George Ward B were promoted to Division 2 and came up against very strong opposition in the shape of Siven Arora of Knighton Park 3-Tigers, he led his team to a comfortable victory over the Barwell side defeating them by 3 sets to 1. The young G Ward team fought back defeating South Wigston by 4 sets to nil and then beat Harborough “A” by 3 sets to 1 to finish second in the Division with 8 points an outside chance of promotion. Frankie Hallam won all of her matches whilst Edward Brown and Alana Richardson won 2 out of their 4 games.
In Division 4 it was unfortunate that both G Ward C and G Ward A were drawn in this same Division. The “C” team went undefeated but were forced to a draw by Knighton Park 7-Zebras which meant they won the group with 10pts and will now be promoted in the next series of matches in January. The “A” team surprisingly beat KP Zebra’s 4 sets to nil but could not defeat their own “C team losing by 3 sets to 1. They did however finish second in the table on 8pts two clear of KP7. Both Ben Bennett (A) and Callum Dale(C) were unbeaten, Oliver Wynne (A) won three of his four sets and both Jack Dennis(C) and Jack Bennett(C) took 50% of their games.
The G Ward “D” team playing in Division 9 did very well winning two of their three matches. They defeated both KP14 (Meerkats) by 3 sets to 1 and Harborough “C” by 4 sets to nil. They found KP13-Beavers too strong and lost by 4 sets to nil. Nevertheless they finished a creditable second, this being only their second appearance in the competition. Young Ryan Lawton was outstanding winning his four sets whilst Lucy Dennis won two of her games and Freya Wynne collected one win.
A number of Hinckley based youngsters took part in the Leicestershire Schools Individual Championships in the last couple of weeks in categories under 12/Under 13 and Under 16 Boys and Girls events. In the Under 11 Girls, Freya excellent results for reached the semi-finals. In the Under 13’s there were excellent results for the Hinckley players Frankie Hallam won the Girls event defeating teammate Alana Richardson and in the boys event Edward Brown took the title defeating Oliver Wynne in the semi-final on the way to the title.
A number of other young players also took part most getting to the knock out stages before losing to better opponents.
Both Frankie and Edward now go forward to the National Finals in April.
