Hinckley 1st team made a good start to their season in Division Two of the Midland Vetts League securing a well-earned draw against Shrewsbury at Cat Sports club Desford. Jason Woodfield was in splendid form collecting all three of his sets in some style, Brian Hagger won one and Pete Jamieson and Woodfield combined well to win a closely fought doubles 11-8 in the fifth game of the set.
In the Preliminary rounds of the Holt Cup George Ward "A” defeated Nalgo by 8 sets to 1. Mark Perkins (GWA) was in good form winning all his sets in straight games. Kevin Edwards (Nalgo) won the one for Nalgo in three games over Derek Thompson (GWA).
G Ward B had a comfortable victory over Barlestone B also in the Holt Cup, all three Barwell players Bob Whittaker, Clive Stretton and Daniel Whittaker winning their three games to canter to victory by 9 sets to Nil.
The other Prelim Holt match also resulted in a large defeat for Queen’s C who lost by 9 sets to 0 to Cat A. Rhys Emery (Cat A) winning all of his sets in straight games.
In the Dry Logic Cup Prelim rounds Cat E produced a fine performance to overcome G Ward C by 5 sets to 4. There was never more than one set between the sides during the game and with two to go G Ward led by 1 set. Alex Downes (Cat E) beat Liam Davies (GWC) in the eighth game to level the scores at for apiece. Alan Hills (Cat E) then secured victory for Cat E by winning an extremely close nine set in the firth game 11-8 to clinch a famous victory.
The other Prelim match in the Dry-Logic Cup brought together the top two Division Two sides. Queen’s B and G Ward E. Queen’s B had too much fire power for the G Ward side on this occasion and ran out winners by 7 sets to 2. Tony Nixon (Queens) became the first player this season to defeat Dave Richardson (GWE) albeit not in a league match. Young Edward Brown (GWE) gave Nixon a fright however taking his to five games before going down 7-1 in the fifth.
