Report from Alex Aston, 2nd team captain:

Having made enquiries about hosting county veterans matches but not finding a suitable venue at an affordable price it has been a struggle to get our best players being willing to travel the long distances required this season.

On Saturday 21st October the second team of Alex Aston(number one and captain), Nick Price(two) Bob Marshall (three) and Marg Shock made the long three hours trek down to Okehampton in South Devon for three matches, with two of them to be played simultaneously on two tables.

With only two of our players currently playing in division one and one of those two playing in division two last season we knew we would be up against it at this level.

For Captain Alex it was a day of near misses. In the first match of the day against Cornwall he looked all set to get us off to a good start going 2-0 and 9-5 up until his opponent got a series of nets which continued into the next two games with Alex unluckily losing duece in the fifth. Nick Price had a better day and picked up a win against the Cornwall number three and also added the mens doubles with Alex with Cornwall winning the rest.

Herefordshire II 2 Cornwall 8

Against Dorset our only win was in the mixed doubles of Alex and Marg

Herefordshire II 1 Dorset II 9

The match against our own first team was the most encouraging of the day as on paper we were probably expected to lose 10-0 but Nick Price picked up what he said was his best win ever against the awkward Nigel Foreshew and Marg Shock won the Women's singles against Liz Hallam.  It was also another two near misses for Alex. Against the classic looper Andy Castle Alex tried to mess up his game with his pimples and it was all to play for at 8-8 in the fifth but Andy held his nerve better at the end to win 11-8. Alex also struggled in the crucial points against Ola Anderson losing in four close ends and twice serving off at 10-10.

Herefordshire II 2 Herefordshire I 8

Report from 2nd team captain Alex Aston:

On Saturday 13th January 2018 we had to travel all the way to Okehampton again but this time for only one match.  For some this was not worthwhile, but keen players Alex Aston, Nick Price and Marg Shock were prepared to go.  As our first team were already there playing two matches of their own we decided to ask Nigel Foreshew to help us out by playing for us at number one while he played for the firsts at number three.

The match between Hereford II and Somerset III was notable in that Nick Price was the only one out of 6 men not playing with pimples. He was unlucky in losing to both of his opponents in four close ends.  Alex did better this time playing at number 2, losing in 5 games to Somerset III's number one and winning in 5 games against their number three.  Nigel who was playing on two tables had little time to rest as all of his matches for Herefordshire II went the full distance, he also lost to their number one 3-2 and beat their number two 3-2 and then in the mixed doubles with Marg lost 3-2. In the other mixed doubles, Alex was able to take advantage of the Somerset lady's (Wendy Price) weak serves and return of serves by serving long and fast which she struggled with and took the uncharacteristic approach of taking the serve on the forehand against her in order to attack it. This worked and we won this 3-1. Wendy was better in the longer rallies though and because of this she beat Marg in the ladies singles.

Herefordshire II 3 Somerset III 7

With two matches left in March in Christchurch Dorset, we have to play a strong Hampshire team and a potential wooden spoon battle with Devon II who have also lost all of their matches so far.  We have more scope for optimism against Devon as Alex has played two of their players previously and has a 1-1 record with number one Mike Kiff and a 2-0 winning record against number two Wim Faason

2nd team match report from Alex Aston March 10th

We made the long trek down to Christchurch in Dorset for our final two matches of the season.  This turned out to be our most successful Saturday of the season.  We had a different line up with Ken Read (number 2) and Simon Morgan (number 3) making their county debuts for Herefordshire alongside captain Alex Aston (number 1) and Marg Shock who have played every match this season.

Having lost all four of our previous matches we first took on Devon 2 who had also lost all four, had the same sets difference and an inferior games difference. This meant it almost a "wooden spoon" match although the matches in the afternoon also counted.  We thought we would need to win at least two out of the first three men's singles matches to stand a chance. We did exactly that as Alex and Simon opened up a 2-0 lead with 3-1 and 3-0 victories respectively. The Devon 2 number 1 Mike Kiff then pulled one back for them with a 3-1 win over Ken. When Mike and Pat Lyon beat Marg and Alex in the mixed doubles we knew we would have to keep winning our men's matches. A second win for Simon, this time 3-1 and a 3-0 win for Pat over Marg made it 3-3.  Choosing the combination of Men's and Mixed doubles is always difficult, especially as none of us had played with Ken previously. We chose the combined awkwardness of Ken and Alex and this proved just about good enough to win the crucial mens doubles 11-8 in the fifth. Ken and Alex then secured victory with singles wins over Paul Wood and Mike Kiff respectively, both 3-1. Devon 2 then won the second mixed doubles 3-1 with Pat and Paul over Simon and Marg to make the final score 6-4 to Herefordshire 2

Our second match was against Hampshire 2 and the league table suggested they were the favorites, having won 3 out of 5 matches and us only 1 out of 5.  However we had strengthened our team since the first Saturday and they were probably weaker without Mike Rhodes. We knew they had lost 9-1 to the all conquering Herefordshire 1 team in the morning with their only victory being the ladies' singles so again we thought we would have to win most of the men's matches to stand a chance. We started in similar fashion to the morning's match winning two out of three in the first round of men's singles. Ken and Alex both recovered from 2-1 down to win in 5.  Simon previously beaten his opponent Cameron Brealey, a long pimple player easily when they last played and simon was using long pimples. This time Simon chose short pimples but Cameron was able to return Simon backhand attacks more easily with them and Cameron won 3-1. Alex and Marg then struggled against Cameron's long pimples in the mixed doubles and another 3-1 defeat made it 2-2. Ken also lost to an in form Cameron 3-1 and Marg 3-0 defeat in the ladies made it 4-2. We decided to stick with the doubles combination that worked in the morning with Ken and Alex once again playing Mens doubles but Cameron and Paul were too good at attacking Kens sidespin lobs and Alex's defence wasn't up to it.  Hampshire 2 secured the victory when Paul May beat Simon 3-0. We then recovered from 6-2 to only lose 6-4 as Alex kept his unbeaten singles record for the day with a 3-1 win over their number one, Daniel Lucking and Marg and Simon then had a good victory over Daniel and Sarah Whithorn in the second mixed doubles.

Devon 2 needed to beat Somerset three 7-3 to overtake us which seemed unlikely but they did well to draw 5-5 ,so we finished second to bottom. Hopefully we can improve on this next season and if we can manage to play matches closer to or in Herefordshire that would help to encourage our best players to play.
