On Sunday 31st January The Bishop of Hereford Bluecoat School travelled to Wood Green Academy to compete in the team zone final for English Schools Table Tennis.

Our team was Jake Price, Kyle Day, Sam Williams and Joel Aldridge.  BHBS were placed in the proverbial group of death along with Dr Challoners from Buckinghamshire, Prince Henry School from Worcestershire and Hamstead from Birmingham.

We won our first game 6-2 against Hamstead with 2 wins each for Jake, Kyle and Sam.  We then drew 4-4 with the very solid Dr Challoners with 2 wins from Jake and Kyle including a vital final game win from Kyle from 2-0 down.  In the final group game we faced Prince Henry, another strong team.  Jake had a fantastic game with their number 1 losing a really good 5 setter 13-11, 9-11, 11-8, 4-11 and 12-10 in the fifth.  Jake was the only player to get a set off this player.  After 7 games we were 3-4 down.  Joel showed great character to win his first game.  He convincingly won 3-0 which gave us another 4-4 draw.  This put us top of the group on sets difference with 4 points.

In the semi-final we played Marling school from Gloucestershire and also drew this game 4-4.  I felt this was a slightly disappointing performance with a couple of tired losses, but we were 4 sets better so went through to the final.

The final was to be a re-match against Prince Henry School.  This was another really tight match and we went 2-4 down, but Kyle and Joel won their last matches to give us another 4-4 draw.  Unfortunately for us, this time we lost on sets difference by 2 sets.

Overall this was a pleasing performance.  We played 5 matches and although we drew 4 we remained unbeaten all day.  Jake and Kyle finished with 7 out of 10, Sam won 5 out of 10 and Joel in his first appearance at this level won 3 out of 10.

This means BHBS are through to the last 16 again and have to travel to Bournemouth for the Regional finals in March.
