The final week of League Fixtures has now been played (with just a couple of results to come), and with next week being Wren Cup (R2) / Wren Plate (R1), we now see a break in the League programme until January.
In Division 1, Adeyfield 1st continue to dominate. A second successive 10-0 win (this one v Northchurch 1st) sees their lead at the top extend to 18 points. Andy Knibbs took Player of the Match, alongside Mike Boardman and Dave Wackrill, and whilst Simon Whale took Dave to 11-9 in the 5th, and the Doubles went to Dave/Mike at 11-8 in the 5th, none of Simon, Frank Beck or Toofan Khalili could salvage a point. On the next door table, 2nd placed Crown & Sceptre were being tested by Adeyfield A, ending up 7-3 winners, with a maximum for Gary Keers, although he had to save two set points in the 3rd leg against Mariusz Konpacki, before edging it 12-10 and going on to win in five. Mariusz did, though, enjoy two wins, against John McCance and Alan Thomas (12-10 in the 5th), whilst Abdul Rahim chipped in with Adeyfield A's other point, again Alan unlucky in losing out at 13-11 in the 5th, though he did have the consolation of a win against John Bleakley. 3rd placed Flamstead 1st were also being given a very tough battle by St. George's 1st, who are starting to consolidate their 4th spot. The final scoreline was 6-4 to Flamstead, lead by Angela Smith with a maximum, although at one stage, she was 2-0 down and deuce in the 3rd leg, against Daniel Broner, before coming through to win in the deciding leg. Biao Wang won one, only losing out at deuce in the 5th against both Daniel and Mike Wilkins, who each also beat Jackie Channell, as did Marc Brent, with Flamstead snatching the win at 11-7 in the Doubles deciding leg.
Player of the Week : Angela Smith.
Division 2 - This division remains the closest of the three, and this week has seen some very competitive matches, demonstrating that closeness. Leaders, Crown & Sceptre B, again managed to hold on to their unbeaten record, but were held to a 5-5 draw for the 3rd successive week, this time by 5th placed St. George's A, for whom both Gerry Evans and Gal-On Broner won twice, whilst they then teamed up to grab the draw with a final leg win in the Doubles. Dave Easey collected another maximum for the leaders, although he was pushed to 12-10 in the 5th by Gerry. Aidan Walsh and Colin Tibbles each beat John Figg to complete the scoreline. 2nd placed Flamstead A were meanwhile going down 4-6 versus 3rd placed Adeyfield B, despite a fine maximum from Jack Reyland, in a result that sees Adeyfield B go joint 2nd with Flamstead A, both four points behind C&S B. Jack's maximum was aided by a win for Brian Hudson against Trevor McFarlane, although he lost out at deuce in the 5th against Mariusz Puczynski. Mariusz and Martin Johnson both won twice for Adeyfield B, and with Trevor McFarlane just beating Allan Dennis at 11-8 in the 5th, then teaming up with Martin to win a close Doubles, it was just enough to seal the win for the home team. Adeyfield C and Crown & Sceptre C were meanwhile battling out a 5-5 draw, in a match where no-one managed to win all their singles, as Bob Andrews and reserve, Scott Boyer, each won two for the home team, whilst Alex Hamilton and Paul Bohknecht did likewise for C&S C, with Niko Ferdinandov's win over Brian Burton leaving the home team 5-4 ahead after the singles. Alex/Paul teamed up against Bob/Niko in a close Doubles, with C&S C winning 11-8 in the decider, to leave the overall honours even. To complete the week of close scorelines, the third 5-5 draw out of the four matches, featured Northchurch A versus McAlpine. McAlpine's XinJun Wang was again unbeaten, and he combined with Youguang Pan for a Doubles win, whilst Youguang also won once, beating George Wood in five games. For Northchurch A, both Steve Laird and Bronwen Watson won one on the night, with the scoreline completed by the absence of a third available player.
Player of the Week : Jack Reyland.
Division 3 - The top two in this division were again both winners, and continue to pull ahead of the rest of the teams. Flamstead C maintained their 100% record with their 7-3 win over Northchurch C, although no-one could get close to the division's top player, Dave Liveing, who extended his singles record to 27 wins from 27. The only surprise was his first loss of a single leg, to Tony Bourke, but he was well in control in the other three legs! Tony, Phil Oswin and Gil Salter each beat both George Shipman and Tony Gibb, and then Tony B/Gil just edged home 11-9 in the deciding leg of the Doubles against Dave/Tony G, to complete the victory. 2nd placed Leverstock Green won 10-0 versus Adeyfield D, though remain 28 points adrift of the leaders, albeit with one match in hand. Gary Everington dropped one leg against Jack Sawyer in the opening set, but it was one-way traffic after that, as none of Jack, Mark Chapman or Stuart Martin could make any further inroads, as Gary, Dave Walker and Chris Jennings all secured maximums. After a run of nine losses, Crown & Sceptre D came away from Northchurch B with a 5-5 draw, and but for a 12-10 loss in the deciding leg of the Doubles, could have secured a first win! For C&S D there was a treble by Peter Bart, plus a win each for Terry Marsh and Barbara Bart, countered by two wins each for Harry Casserley and Phil Casserley for Northchurch B, whilst Chris Watson was the one to go away empty handed. Leaders, Flamstead C, had also won the previous week, 8-2 against Highfield, although were given a hard fight early on, as it was two all after four sets, with one of the Flamstead C wins only at 11-9 in the fifth, as Alan Jolly went very close against Tony Bourke, but Flamstead battled through to win all the remaining sets, with Dan Penberthy in fine form.
Player of the Week : Dave Liveing.
