Match Report

A very exciting match where “underdogs” Tackleway B could easily have snatched a draw but in the end title contenders Bexhill B ran out 6-4 winners. The first two matches went to form with Nathan Darby taking Steve Hickey in four sets and Ryan Heselden overcoming Roy Funnell in three. Mike Funnell pulled one back for Tackleway against John Ellis in an epic battle of intermittently tentative and flowing push, top and smash from both players before Mike finally crossed the line 11-8 in the 5th set. The next match was even closer but a wonderful display of power loops and smashes from Nathan neutralised, blocked and equalled with cracking attacking down both wings from Roy. At deuce in the 5th set the luck went with Nathan 13-11. Ryan overcame Mike in three sets, the doubles was easily won by Bexhill and Steve also took John comfortably in three sets while Mike couldn't handle Nathan – the Hastings champion running out an easy winner. So at 6-2 up Bexhill looked fairly safe to take at least a 7-3 victory. Up stepped Roy to have another titanic clash with John, with the latter's long pimples rather slowing down Roy’s normal aggressive attack. With both men totally pumped up and full of passion for the victory, Roy finally found enough fabulous attacking smashes to win it 11-6 in the 4th set. The final match of the evening was the most impressive of the lot as Steve Hickey scraped past top-six Hastings man Ryan. The Tackleway man's long pimple short push and quick flat smashes saw him slightly undo the ultra-consistent youngster to secure a memorable 11-4 victory in the 5th set.
