Match of the week in the Hastings & District Table Tennis League Division One was the clash of the two bottom sides, both from the Bexhill club.

Bottom placed Bexhill E went down 6-4 to the D side who cruised to a 5-1 lead before the E team took three of the last four sets to claim a consolation point.

Graham Primett and John Bradbury (E) and Cameron Jones and Kevin McEwan (D) all won twice.

Bexhill E would now seem to have it all to do, but Bexhill D have eased ahead of Tackleway B, despite the latter’s excellent performance, going down to second placed Saints A 6-4. Dave Butler won three and James Winchester two for Saints while John Dyson’s two for the losers included a recovery from two games down against Winchester.

Saints’ discomfort would only have increased as they watched the action on a neighbouring table at the Hastings Academy as Hollington Academy A opened up a one point gap at the top with an emphatic 10-0 win over Hollington Academy B.

Paul Barry, Nathan Darby and Ryan Heselden all recorded maximums.

Thirteen-year old Arthur Bracken had his third successive maximum for Hollington Academy C, but could not save his side from a 6-4 defeat at Tackleway A.  Mike Funnell and Roy Funnell won two each for Tackleway with Roy just losing out to Bracken at 12-10 in the decider.

Third placed Bexhill A were untroubled in a 10-0 whitewash of Bexhill B, with Robert Warner, Ryan Warner and new Eastbourne Champion David Rayment all winning three. Ryan Warner was taken to 11-9 in the fifth by Andy Summers who has cast aside his combination bat for a more counter-hitting style.

Bexhill A closed the gap to Saints A to four points.

In another one-sided contest, Bexhill C beat Hollington Academy D 9-1 with Graham Gillett and Andy Chapman unbeaten and Pete Robinson winning two. It was looking like another whitewash until Andy Furnival had a straight games win over Robinson in the last set of the evening.
