Observer 30-03-18 Watts Cup

The Quarter Finals of the cup competitions of the Hastings & District Table Tennis League provided some tense encounters, none more so than the Watts Cup, the senior tournament, in the clash between Hollington Academy B and C teams.

Academy B edged home 5-4 with Rose Rainton and Sam Collins both winning twice.

The result itself was almost overshadowed by a first Hastings defeat of the season for fifteen year-old Fraser Kent who is unbeaten in the Hastings League and also the Eastbourne League, where he claimed the Mens Singles crown in February.

Kent lost in straight games to Sam Collins and, despite coming back to 4-4 the C team lost out in the final doubles to exit the competition.

League leaders Hollington Academy A lost the opening doubles at Tackleway A before cruising home 7-2 with Paul Barry and Basher Obeyed unbeaten.

In another derby, Bexhill A had a comfortable 5-1 win over Bexhill B when David Rayment was unbeaten and Andy Summers beat Ryan Warner in the B team’s only success.

Graham Gillett, with two wins, led Bexhill D to a narrow 5-3 win at Saints B. Saints trailed 2-4 but narrowed the gap when Graham Deeprose beat John Bradbury in five games only for Brian Beaney to clinch it for Bexhill with another five game win over John Wond.

The Semi Final draw sees Hollington Academy B play Bexhill B and Bexhill A play Hollington Academy A.

In the Minor Trophy, Bexhill H beat Hollington E with Chris Hack (Bexhill) and Rob Clemence (Hollington) winning both their singles. Bexhill effectively won by virtue of taking two of the three doubles and will face Bexhill F in the Semi Final.

Holders Hollington A had Shaun Godfrey and Steph Sargent unbeaten in their 5-2 win at Monarchs B and will play Hollington B.
