Hastings Closed Report by Diane Webb

The Hastings Closed Table Tennis Championships 2018 took place at Hollington Community Centre on Saturday, 7th April 2018. There were 32 participants for the seven events and the tournament provided a feast of table tennis with players from all three senior divisions in the league taking part.

The first title to be decided was the Division 3 Singles Championships which went to second ranked Yasar Akar of Hollington Table Tennis Club, Malcolm Hilton of Bexhillians was the Runner-up.

The Mixed Doubles was a round robin of five pairs. Sue Pingram of Tackleway partnered by Ryan Warner of Bexhillians lifted the trophy after winning all their matches. Nathan Darby and Sheila King, Hollington Academy, finished in second spot.

A second title went to Sue Pingram when she was paired with scratch partner, Alison Jordan of Monarchs, in the Women’s Doubles. The final was a very tight match and the duo just held on to win 13-11 in the fifth. Hollington Academy’s Sheila King and Bexhillians Tina Beaney were the Runners-up. Further trophies came the way of both Tina and Sue in the Women’s Singles Championships with Tina taking the title winning all her matches. Sue was in second place by virtue of a positive count back.

On to the Men’s Singles Championships which had the largest entry of the day with 23 players. The event started with group matches before the knock-out stages of the competition. Things didn’t go according to plan for the top two seeds who both lost at the Semi-final stage leaving the final to be decided between two Hollington Academy players, Bashar Obeyed and Nathan Darby. A thrilling final saw Nathan come out on top, 6-11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-8 to take the title and the trophy.

The Men’s Doubles saw Nathan Darby hold aloft trophy number two when paired, with Saints Dave Butler. It was an exciting final with some brilliant play; the match first of all favouring the father and son combination of Rob and Ryan Warner before Dave and Nathan surged ahead in the fifth game with a lead that was too much to claw back, winning the final end 11-4.

The final event of the day was for the Division 2 Championships title and for the second year running, Paul Hyland of Nalgo was the champion with Tina Beaney the gallant Runner-up, reaching the final after her Semi-final win over her father, Brian. President, Mick Hart was on hand to present all the trophies.

An excellent day’s table tennis with some close and exciting matches played in a competitive but friendly manner. It was good to see several old friends who had come along to watch the play. Thanks go to all at Hollington Community Centre for making everyone so welcome and providing refreshments and to all involved in the running of the tournament.
