League leaders Hollington Academy A dropped a point in Division One of the Hastings & District Table Tennis League, beating Saints B 7-3 with Paul Barry and Basher Obeyed unbeaten. Saints didn’t give up without a fight and Ron Davenport secured their point when he beat Andy Furnival 12-10 in the fifth and John Wond came back from 0-2 down against Obeyed only to fade in the decider.

Second-placed Bexhill A failed to make ground when they won 7-3 against a two-man Saints A, for whom Dave Butler gained a maximum. Bexhill’s Rob Warner took Butler closest in going the distance but going down 11-4 in the fifth.

Tackleway A probably ensured they would not be sucked into the relegation struggle with a 7-3 defeat of Bexhill B when Michael Funnell, Roy Funnell and Sue Pingram all won twice, as did Ryan Warner for Bexhill. This was a titanic struggle with six matches going the distance and five of these going to deuce in the fifth.

The Division’s back-markers met when Tackleway C and Tackleway B drew 5-5 in a match where the lead changed hands five times. Roger Pingram was unbeaten for the C side and Adrian Goodrum won twice for the B team. The C team trailed 3-4 but hit back as Kevin Rowe edged out Martin Richards 11-9 in the fifth and Pingram beat Goodrum in straight games. In another 5-game thriller, Gina Rogers beat Rowe to ensure honours even.

Another in-house derby saw Hollington Academy C defeat their own B team 6-4 to boost their chances of a third place finish. Fraser Kent (C )was again unbeaten while Sam Collins (B) won two but the C side’s win was probably clinched early on when Nick Standen beat Sheila King 12-10 in the decider.

Bexhill G were hoping to get something from their game with Bexhill C but lost out 8-2 with maximums for Graham Gillett and John Wilson for the winners. No surprises there, but reserve Dan Starnes clinched the fourth point with the tightest of straight sets wins over Cameron Jones.
