Watts Cup Final 2017

The season opened with a bang in the Hastings & District Table Tennis League with Hollington Academy A winning the Watts Cup, the League’s knock-out competition, 5-4 over holders Bexhill A in a belated playing of the 2016/17 final at the Bexhill club.

Academy thus completed the league and cup double in one of the best and most exciting finals in recent memory.

Bexhill’s Lewis Mayhew and Rob Warner excelled on the night, both winning both their singles, but the teamwork of Academy’s Paul Barry, Nathan Darby and Basher Obeyed, who between them won all three doubles contested, won the day.

An outstanding counter-hitting contest saw Hastings champion Mayhew beat perennial title holder Barry 11-9 in the 5th game to put Bexhill 3-2 ahead.

After a second doubles win for the Academics, Warner restored the Bexhill lead, beating Darby 3-1, only for Barry to level things with a five-game win over Martin Kellaway.

In the deciding doubles, Darby and Obeyed led 2-1 but trailed in the fourth before an inspired spell of hitting from Darby helped Academy to a 12-10 win and the trophy.
