Top seed crashes out of Junior Masters

It was a night of shocks at the 19th Halifax Junior Masters event.

The biggest was the quarter-final exit of three times Masters winner and British Cadet No. 1, Amir Hussain, to an inspired Lewis Palmer. Amir relied on Lewis breaking down, but the strong topspin loops and drives on both wings from Lewis were relentless, and he emerged a 3–0 winner with power and consistency throughout the contest.

The earlier group stages were also eventful. Group 1 saw the elimination of current Masters Champion Jonny Heslop, who lost to team-mate Cameron Sandhu in five games. Jonny had to beat Amir to stand a chance of going through on countback, but again lost in five.

Group 2 was as expected, with Fraser Riley and Zak Cantor going through to the quarter-finals, as Fraser beat Zak 12–10 in the fifth of an entertaining contest.

Group 3 was also more straightforward, with Danny Olsberg as winner and Lewis Palmer runner-up going through. Spencer Hurd from Haworth Hawks had a good five-game win over Nicholas Miller in this group.

Group 4 was routine for winner Ben Fillingham, but the forfeit of Jake Clarke due to injury halfway through the group contest left the opportunity for Rayhan Khan and Haworth Hawks’ Ben Farrar, with Rayhan emerging a 3-1 winner.
