20th February 2018 Match Reports

 The Eastern Valley Table Tennis League Division One title was virtually clinched this week by Cwmbran Colts. In their latest match they inflicted a heavy defeat on their closest rivals Cwmbran Aztecs by 25-6. The Colts now hold a 23 point lead over 2nd place with 2 matches to play and a game in hand. The player of the match for the 7th time this season was Lyndon Jones and his 3 wins included a good win over the Aztecs' Tony Collins. Jones was well supported by Lee Thomas and Mathew Pearce with 3 and 2 wins respectively. For the Aztecs, Tony Collins produced the only win for his team. 

As a result of the Aztecs heavy defeat, YMCA Preachers moved into 2nd place following their 25-8 defeat of Blaenavon Aces.  Player of the match was the Preachers' Ray Goulding with 3 wins, just edging out team-mate David Lloyd who also had 3 wins. They were both well supported by Claire Flannagan with 2 wins. The Aces had to call upon a substitute player in Colin Price and he registered his teams only success with a good win over the higher ranked Claire Flannagan.

The final match in Division One saw Cwmbran Blues defeat Bristol Nomads 20-13 in a match that saw both teams missing their usual players and the Nomads only having 2 players. Despite their defeat the Nomads provided the player of the match in Mark Edmunds with maximum wins For the Blues Roger Grech, Ben Pearce and John Thomas had one win each.

The race for the Division Two title is reaching an exciting climax as both Cwmbran Panthers and Cwmbran Dynamos have the same points total with 4 matches left in the season. This week saw Cwmbran Panthers draw level with their rivals following a hard fought 19-15 win over North Gwent Cougars. Player of the match for the 11th time this season was the Cougars Greg Price with maximum wins. Sam Slatter fought very well for his win and 5 points. The Panthers called upon the services of Wayne Ford as replacement for players unavailable and he and Colin Price picked up 2 wins each. 

Cwmbran Dynamos were unfortunate to face the Divisions second best player Roshan Rai in their defeat to Cwmbran Eccentrics 18-12. Rai was being used as a substitute player and picked up maximum wins to win the player of the match award. The Eccentrics' John Thomas also had maximum wins.  For the Dynamos, Alex Jones, Richard Lownsbrough and Will Smith-Haddon all had a win each.

The final match in Division Two saw Chepstow Chiefs complete a 22-13 win over Cwmbran Fellows. Player of the match was the Chiefs Connor Pyke with 3 wins and was well supported by Elliot Kempton with 2 wins. Finley McNeil picked up 1 win and 5 points to reflect his improvement over the season. For the Fellows, Haydn Skinner picked up 2 wins and 8 points.
