13th October 2015 Match Reports

The second week of matches in the Eastern Valley Table Tennis League included a match between two previous winners of Division One, Cwmbran Aztecs and Cwmbran Blues which the Aztecs won 22 - 17. It was always going to be a tight and competitive match as highlighted by the first match of the night when Andrew Ryder beat Roger Grech 19-17, 10-12, 16-14, 11-13, 11-9. The Aztecs certainly needed a player of the match performance from Mark Edmunds with his 3 wins as their normally reliable No. 1 Tony Collins suffered 2 defeats to Roger Grech and Keith Armstrong.

Bristol Nomads retained their leadership of Division One with a 25 - 10 win over Cwmbran Colts thanks to a player of the match performance from Ian Maggs with his 3 wins. Maggs was ably backed up by Peter Gordon with his 3 wins and Emily Standing, making her league debut, with 2 wins. For the Colts John Spencer did his best to stem the tide to win 6 of his teams points.

For the second week running Claire Flannagan produced a player of the match performance to help her side, YMCA Preachers, to a 22 - 10 win against Blaenavon Aces. Flannagan's 3 wins was well backed up by David Lloyd and Eric Turner with their 2 wins each. Jon Allen did well for the Aces and his only loss was in 5 sets against Flannagan.

The Division Two title holders from last season, Cwmbran Panthers, continued their good form with a 24 - 9 win against Blaenavon Bulldogs. The Panthers No. 1, Mike Blatchford, was playing his first match of the season and produced a player of the match performance with 3 wins. He was well supported by his team mates Yuri Cherkosenko and Howard Gaut with their 2 wins. The only player in the Bulldog side to offer some resistance was Lincoln Alford, whose only loss was to Blatchford.

The Cwmbran Dynamos team saw the return of Star Limbu to League table tennis, after missing last season. He helped his side to a convincing 27 - 5 win over Cwmbran Fellows, taking advantage of the absence of the Fellows No. 1 Wayne Ford. For the Dynamos there were maximum wins for Alex Jones( player of the match), Will Smith-Haddon and Limbu.

Pursuing the Panthers are Cwmbran Devils who are also undefeated following their 23 - 10 win over Cwmbran Eccentrics.  The Devils' Stan Williams was player of the match with his 3 wins, backed up by Glenda Prytherch and Matthew Powell with 2 wins each. It has been an excellent start to Powell's first season in League table tennis with 4 wins out of 6. For the Eccentrics Sunam Rai provided the only bright note with her 2 wins.
