3rd November 2015 Match Reports

Week 5 of the Eastern Valley Table Tennis League saw the top 2 sides in Division One, Bristol Nomads and Cwmbran Aztecs, go head to head. The leaders, Bristol Nomads, had to borrow a player, David Lloyd, from YMCA to maintain a full compliment of players and it was Lloyd who proved to be the match winner by, perhaps, surprisingly beating the Aztecs Tony Collins 3-1 to give the Nomads a closely fought 17-14 win. Although there were 2 wins each for Collins and Mark Edmunds for the Aztecs and Lloyd and Mike Bishop for the Nomads it was Bishop who was player of the match.

With the Aztecs losing was the turn of Ymca Preachers who moved into second place with a convincing 25-5 win over Cwmbran Colts. The Colts could not overcome the absence of their number one player, Lee Thomas, and another player of the match performance from the Preachers' Claire Flannagan, who continues to show improvement from last season. There was also 3 wins for the Preachers' Ray Goulding.

The third match in Division One saw Cwmbran Blues defeat Blaenavon Aces 20-15 in game that produced the shock result of the night with the Aces' Ben Allen beating the Blues' David D Lloyd 3-2 for his second win of the season. Young Allen also picked up his 3rd win of the season by beating Matthew O'Dwyer. For the Blues there was a player of the match performance from Mark Farrow with his 3 wins and 2 wins from Lloyd who managed to inflict revenge on the Allen family by defeating Ben's dad Jonathan Allen.

Division Two continues to be dominated by the Cwmbran Panthers and their latest win came over Cwmbran Eccentrics 25-5. For the Eccentrics Peter Alderson battled to gain his sides only points but the Panthers proved too strong with maximum wins for Mike Blatchford and Yuri Cherkasenko.

Cwmbran Dynamos efforts to maintain a challenge to the Panthers has been affected by the temporary loss through injury of their number one player, Alex Jones. Whilst they were able to overcome Jones' absence last week, in their latest match against Blaenavon Bulldogs they went down 18-15. The Bulldogs' Lincoln Alford, continues to fly the flag for his side with another player of the match performance with 3 wins. However, he was taken to 5 sets by Will Smith-Haddon and Marta Morris, who was making her first appearance of the season. The inexperienced Morris did very well to pick up 7 points for her side. For the Bulldogs there were good wins for Coel Alford and Callum Hunt over Sunam Rai, who could not follow up her maximum wins from last week.

The final match in Division Two saw Cwmbran Devils battle it out against a depleted Cwmbran Fellows side. The Fellows could not overcome being one player down, despite maximum wins for Wayne Ford and lost 18-12. The game of the match was played between the Devils' Matthew Powell and the Fellows' Matthew Cullingford in which Powell came from 2 sets down to win 13-11 in the final set of an exciting contest.
