SENIOR LEAGUE 2021-22 WEEK 4

Results for the week from the Doric Insurance sponsored senior leagues have left a number of Divisions extremely closely contested at the top, including the top 3 Divisions.

Division 1

The top flight is very tight, with just a single point between the top 4 sides, with the leading 3 sides on identical points going into the final games of the initial rotation of fixtures.

Lions A, Whistlers A and Lions B are the sides locked at the top and in that order only based on games ratio. Lions A are plus 12, Whistlers A plus 8 and Lions B plus 6. All 3 sides are unbeaten with each having won 2 matches and drawn 2.

The leading Lions sides met this week in an encounter that unsurprisingly ended as a 5-5 draw. Phil Ogier was the player of the match for his B side due to yet another unbeaten evening for one of just 2 players left in the Division with an unblemished singles record this season. He impressively saw off the challenges of Ben Foss, Ryan Bichard and Steve Ozanne all without dropping a set. Liam Robilliard added a straight sets win over Ozanne in the opener, whilst Clark mirrored this feat later in the match to ensure a draw was obtained. Foss and Bichard each beat Robilliard and Clark in singles action for the defending champions, however Bichard's win against Robilliard was very tight as he edged through 12-10 in the deciding 5th leg. Foss and Bichard won the doubles against Robilliard and Clark in straight sets.

Whistlers A on the other hand had their first comfortable win of the season, overcoming bottom of the table side Whistlers C 8-2. Josh Stacey led the way for the victors due him defeating Matt Casey, Ellis Tomlin and Joseph Bourgaize in singles action. Dawn Morgan added wins over Casey and Bourgaize in straight sets, but was surprisingly beaten in straight sets by an impressive Tomlin performance, his first victory of the season. Ryan Gilson earned a nice 5 set win over Casey and also beat Tomlin in straight sets, but he was defeated by Bourgaize 11-9 in the 5th end of their encounter in the final match of the night.

Whistlers B are the side in 4th just 1 point off the leading trio and they defeated 5th placed side Lions C 7-3 this week. Lawrence Stacey is the other player with a 100% singles record and he maintained this due to singles wins over Paul Hainsworth, Andy Gill and Charlotte Casey, dropping just the single end to Gill in the process. Paula Le Ber played her best table tennis of the season so far en route to 4 set wins over Gill and Casey, whilst Ben Sharp came through a close straight sets encounter against Casey. Stacey and Sharp won the doubles rubber over Hainsworth and Casey in 5 sets, having faced a 2-1 deficit to extend the margin of victory. Hainsworth beat Sharp and Le Ber in straight sets, whilst Gill battled past Sharp by an epic 19-17 score in the 5th end.

Division 2

Whilst the top Division is seemingly the closest it has ever been after 4 matches, Division 2 goes one better.

There are amazingly 4 teams level on points following the first 6 matches of the season.

The records for all 4 teams is also identical with each having won 4, drawn 1 and lost 1 with games ratio only having the odd match in it.

The order officially is St Pauls A then Ravenscroft Panthers A followed by Lions D and Whistlers D who are exactly tied on games ratio.

The Panthers and Whistlers outfits did battle this week and a draw did no real favours for either side in their pursuit of the title. The Whistlers side were led strongly by Kay Chivers who has lost just one singles match all season. She was in top form during straight sets singles wins over the tricky Craig Dunning and Oscar Pearson and reserve Richard Edwards. Keith Opie beat Edwards in straight sets in the match opener, whilst he teamed with Chivers to come out on top in the vital doubles rubber over Dunning and Pearson in 4 sets. Pearson and Dunning each beat Opie and Vaudin in singles action, however 5 sets were required in their matches against Opie and Pearson also needed the full 5 sets to get the better of Vaudin. Edwards proved his worth as reserve by picking up a vital straight sets over Vaudin.

This result enabled the veteran St Pauls side to return to the top of the table after a week's absence. They beat Lions G comfortably 7-3 this week in a fixture where Tim Le Page won all of his singles matches. He defeated left-handed junior James Crocker in 4 sets before beating brothers Brian and Andy Ferbrache in straight sets. Chas Elliott defeated Crocker and Andy but was ousted 16-14 in the deciding 5th end by Brian in the final match of the night. Maurice James added a further 2 wins over Crocker in straight sets and Andy in 5 sets, but was also beaten by Brian in 5 sets. Andy and Brian won the doubles rubber against Le Page and James impressively in straight sets.

Lions D on the other hand have been slowly going about their business after a slow start to the season and are the form side of the Division. Having only gained a single point from their opening 2 fixtures, they have since made it 4 consecutive wins and a mighty 9-1 win over Whistlers E was obtained this week. Luke Le Tissier and sister Chloe each showed good form during the match with wins over Stuart Sarre, Matthew Board and Darren Sarre. Shelby Timms earned wins over Stuart and Darren but was beaten in 4 sets by Board which prevented the whitewash. Luke and Shelby won the doubles against the Sarre brothers in 4 sets.

Division 3

Continuing with the theme of multiple sides being locked together at the top is Division 3, however here there are just 2 sides that cannot currently be separated.

Both are Ravenscroft Panthers sides with the B side top due to their superior games ratio over their D side.

The duo clashed this week in the big top of the table clash and a stalemate was the order of the day. For the B side Steve Martin and Shaun Mosley each beat Juliette Yeaman and Marli Barker in singles action, whilst Richard Edwards edged past Barker 11-9 in the 5th set of their encounter in the final match of the night. For the D side Becks O'Keefe starred with a hat-trick of singles wins over her opponents and remains unbeaten. She won the doubles with Yeaman over Martin and Edwards in straight sets. Yeaman obtained the crucial 5th rubber when she battled past Edwards 11-9 in the 5th leg of their match.

Division 4

The 4th Division is the only one where a side holds a physical points advantage as Lions J are 2 points clear of Lions K. The league leaders were 8-2 winners over Lions M this week. Val Guilbert and Alex Paul each beat Tim Grosvenor, Frank Copollo and Albie Lihou in singles action. Diane Le Page defeated Lihou in straight sets and also combined with Paul to beat Grosvenor and Copollo in doubles action without loss.
