Senior League 2018-19 Week 19

Division 1

Victories were obtained for the top sides in the leading Division of the Doric Insurance sponsored senior leagues this week.

League leaders Whistlers B would have expected a comfortable run against the bottom placed side Whistlers A, however in the end they did it the hard way via a narrow 6-4 win. Lawrence Stacey is joint top of the Division 1 averages and has been instrumental in his side leading the Division. In this fixture he again led the way strongly due to his trio of singles wins against Dawn Morgan, Ellis Tomlin and 2nd Division reserve Paula Le Ber, dropping just the single game to Tomlin in the process. Matthew Casey defeated Le Ber in straight sets, but his most important win came against Tomlin over 5 sets in a match where he trailed 2-1. Ryan Gilson picked up the final victory for the leaders due to his important 5 set win against Le Ber. This result also came from a deficit of 2-1, with these comeback 5 set wins being the difference on the night. Morgan performed well for the defeated side due to singles wins over Gilson in straight sets and Casey in 4 sets, whilst Tomlin overcame Gilson strongly in straight sets. The duo also won the doubles encounter against Casey and Gilson in 5 sets.

Lions B defeated 4th placed side Lions C 9-1 and therefore remain just 2 points behind the leaders prior to their crunch top of the table clash next week. Phil Ogier and Andre De Carteret each ran out victors against Andy Gill, Corey Brouard and reserve Caden Brouard in singles action. The pair also won the doubles over Gill and Corey in 5 sets, coming back from 2-1 down in the process. Dan Collenette defeated Gill and Caden in 4 sets, however he was defeated by Corey in 5 sets in the penultimate match of the evening, preventing the whitewash.

3rd placed side Lions A were the other winners following their 7-3 victory over 5th placed side Whistlers C. Ben Foss, Ryan Bichard and Jamie Ferbrache all defeated Mark Pipet and Charlotte Casey in singles action to make sure of the win. Foss and Ferbrache also came out in top in the doubles clash over Casey and Joshua Stacey in 5 sets. Stacey went unbeaten for the defeated Whistlers outfit due to his trio of singles wins. He needed 4 sets to overcome both Bichard and Ferbrache, but his best win came against Foss where he edged the decider 12-10 following a strong comeback from 2-0 from his younger opponent.

Division 2

Lions D remain a single point clear at the top of the 2nd Division, but still also have a game in hand on their title rivals Whistlers D.

They were absolutely clinical this week due to their matching 10-0 whitewashes over Ravenscroft Panthers C and Ravenscroft Panthers B. Tim Le Page, Steve Ozanne and Carl Le Tissier all defeated Richard Edwards, Juliette Yeaman and reserve Mick Ingrouille from the C side on Monday evening. Ozanne and Le Tissier won the doubles in this fixture over Yeaman and Edwards in straight sets.

Peter Vivian, Shaun Mosley and reserve Mark Windsor were the players from the B side to taste defeat to the league leaders on Thursday evening. In this fixture it was Le Page and Le Tissier that combined to win the doubles rubber against Vivian and Mosley in straight sets.

Whistlers D had a scare during their clash with Ravenscroft Panthers A, but managed to squeeze through 6-4. The main resistance from the Panthers side came from Billy Ogier who put in a superb performance, which included singles wins over Kay Chivers, Keith Opie and Ben Sharp, dropping just a single end to both Chivers and Opie in the process. Albert Unden defeated Sharp, however the Whistlers side mopped up all other wins against the Panthers side also consisting of Ben Foote.

Division 3

St Pauls B still hold their commanding 6 point lead at the top, however they were held to a 5-5 draw by 2nd placed side Lions H this week. Craig Dunning maintained his 100% single record due to his wins over Peter Powell, Edward Rowe and Oscar Pearson. He did lose his second match this season in the doubles however, as Rowe and Pearson put in a great performance to defeat Dunning and John Wills in straight sets. Derek Carter and Wills each defeated Peter Powell to make sure of the draw. Pearson and Rowe both competed well on the night as each earned singles wins over Carter and Wills.

Division 4

Whistlers I maintained their slender single point lead following a comprehensive 9-1 win over their J side. Andy Le Page, Joe Le Page and Max Burrows all defeated Shelby Timms, Tia Timms and Leah Moore in singles action. Shelby and Moore prevented the whitewash due to their impressive 4 set doubles win over Joe and Burrows.
