Senior League 2017-18 Week 17

Division 1

The hard fought battle for the top flight crown of the Doric Insurance sponsored senior leagues continued this week, with another pair of victories for the leading sides, Lions A and Whistlers A.

The sides are due to meet in a pivotal top of the table on Wednesday evening and each set-up the clash nicely due to their respective wins.

Lions A were missing Dan Collenette from their side this week and they were tested all the way by Whistlers B, before edging past 6-4. Ben Foss and Paul Hainsworth were each on hand to secure straight set wins over Matthew Casey and reserve Ian Fitchet, whilst they also teamed to overcome man of the match Joshua Stacey and Casey in the doubles encounter, also without losing any ends. The 6th and final win came from Lions 2nd Division reserve Jez Powell, who defeated Fitchet in straight sets. Stacey put in an excellent evening of table tennis in which he overcame each of the Lions players over the course of 4 sets in singles action.

Whistlers A closed the games difference gap for the second consecutive week following their 7-3 win over Lions B. Garry Dodd, fresh from taking his 8th CI Open Top 12 title just a few days reserved, continued his dominant grip of the Division 1 averages, where he is yet to lose a singles encounter. He won all of his singles matches once more in this fixture, but needed 4 sets to overcome Phil Ogier and 5 to defeat Ryan Bichard. His other win came over Andre De Carteret in straight sets. He also teamed up with Mark Pipet to defeat Ogier and De Carteret in the doubles in straight sets. Pipet himself added a couple of important wins over De Carteret and Bichard in straight sets to ensure that the Whistlers side picked up the 2 points. Martin Sarre extended the margin of victory due to his 5 set win over De Carteret in the match opener.

Whistlers C moved off the foot of the table due to a 6-4 win over the now bottom, Lions C side. Lawrence Stacey was instrumental in the win due to his singles wins over Andy Gill, Jamie Ferbrache and reserve Corey Brouard. He also combined with Charlotte Casey to clinch a vital 5 set doubles win over Gill and Ferbrache in 5 sets. Ryan Gilson obtained the final 2 wins when he defeated Gill in 5 sets and Brouard in 4 sets.

Division 2

Whistlers D stay top of the Division 2 tree by 7 points following their second consecutive 10-0 whitewash. Ravenscroft Panthers B were the side at the wrong end of the result on this occasion and Kay Chivers, Keith Opie and Elis Tomlin all defeated Ben Foote, Juliette Yeaman and reserve Mark Windsor in singles action, with Windsor obtaining the only leg of the entire match during his 4 set reverse against Opie. Chivers and Opie took the doubles rubber when they overcame Windsor and Yeaman in straight games.

Division 3

St Pauls B stay 10 points clear at the top of the third Division, but they were pushed by Whistlers H, in what transpired to be a narrow 6-4 win for the league leaders. Craig Dunning was the man of the match due to his wins over Stuart Sarre, Darren Sarre and Nathan Pinchemain. Derek Carter added wins over Pinchemain and Darren and also combined with Dunning to win the all important doubles clash against the Sarre brothers in straight games.

Division 4

Lions L extended their lead at the top to 3 points after they earned a tight 6-4 win over Whistlers K this week. Jan Priest led the way with wins over Shelby Timms, Leah Moore and Max Burrows. Rose Powell added wins over Moore and Burrows and also teamed with Priest to win the crucial doubles tie over Moore and Burrows in straight sets.
