Senior League 2017-18 Week 25

Division 1

The Doric Insurance sponsored senior leagues came to a conclusion this week after another long season.

Top flight champions Lions A finished off their season strongly with a 7-3 win over the side that finished in 3rd position, Lions B. Ben Foss and Paul Hainsworth were each unbeaten on the evening. Foss defeated Phil Ogier in 5 sets and Ryan Bichard and Andre De Carteret in 4 sets, whilst Paul Hainsworth overcame De Carteret in straight sets, Ogier in four and then Bichard over the full distance, having trailed 9-7 in that final game before pinching it 11-9. Foss teamed with Dan Collenette to win the doubles rubber over Ogier and De Carteret in straight games. Each of the B side picked up singles wins over Collenette, which included an excellent straight sets win for De Carteret.

Runners-up Whistlers A also finished strongly after defeating Whistlers C 6-4. The main talking point from the encounter is undoubtedly Garry Dodd, who managed to complete his second consecutive season of not having lost a league singles match. The CI number 1 reeled off singles wins 73 to 75 on the final fixture of the season when he beat Lawrence Stacey 3-1 and both Ryan Gilson and reserve Shane Cotter in straight games. Mark Pipet and Martin Sarre each defeated Cotter in straight sets, however it was the crucial doubles rubber which sealed the deal. Dodd teamed with Sarre and they came back impressively from a 2-0 deficit to overcome Stacey and Gilson over the full 5 sets.

The final fixture saw bottom placed side Lions C pick up a point against 4th placed side Whistlers B. Jamie Ferbrache beat reserves Paula Le Ber and Ian Fitchet and also teamed with Andy Gill to overcome Joshua Stacey and Le Ber in 4 sets in the doubles clash. Gill and Le Page each beat Fitchet to complete the draw. Stacey was unbeaten in singles action for the Whistlers outfit and Le Ber had a strong evening which included wins over Gill and Le Page.

Presentation evenings were held at the centre following the conclusion of matches on Wednesday and Thursday this week and included with this was the 'Players Player' of the season awards.
